White Powder inside TO

Hi everyone

I took my TO that I used to roast my coffee ala KKTO apart today as I wanted to do a bypass on the mechanical thermostat. However upon disassembling the innermost compartment where the motor and the switches are housed in, there seem to be a thick layer of corn flour-like brown powder encased in all the components of this compartment. I have attached a few pictures to illustrate this. Has any KKTO owners here encountered anything like this before? I am worried the powder might be hazardous if consumed.

    It's normal to get oily brown residue from bean smoke However I have Never seen that happen before Question Do you get condensation when roasting ? Remember that it's not expensive to replace a TO so if in doubt - replace it KK

    Hi KK Yeah its a really odd one. I will try to replace it and see how it goes. Judging from the response, I am assuming the problem is uncommon. With regards to condensation, not that I could observe. Cheers Cikay

    I have seen the same thing with everyone of my turbo ovens, not sure what causes it, I am in the tropics so I am used to seeing odd growths inside electrical equipment! Didnt ever seem to effect anything though! None of the customers complained!

    Hi galumay, Thanks for your reply. Its reassuring to know that it is happening to other TOs as well. You mentioned 'everyone of my turbo ovens'. Are they all of the same brand?  I am using the Lumina 1400W TO that I got off Aldi. Initially I thought it might be from storing my TO outdoors but I have a plastic bag loosely covering it. Where and how do you store your roasting equipment? Cheers Cikay

    Perfectly normal. It was on mine as well. Suspect it's dust / chaff residue that sticks as its probably a bit oily.  It's easy to clean with a toothbrush and vacuum cleaner. It does cause electrical shorting though so make sure you clean it....

    It usually happens at higher temps...  And also related to the type of beans/chaff. Once the build up gets bad inside the TO = Electrical Short and usually trips the ELCB... Be careful...  When mine starts to trip = New TO  as it is too messy and not 100% If you think you can totally strip and clean the internals good enough..  Then your a better girl than me and I have tried a few times..
