Ghetto cold brew

  • Great idea for a thread. Will post a photo of my cold brew setup  next time I make one. Queensland ghettos are obviously quite upmarket. Not too many aeropresses in ghettos hereabouts.
  • I think I ground too finely this time around. The drip rate out of the bottle is exceeding that of the extraction rate. Looking good tho!
  • *Galumay disappears into kitchen to find Aeropress and chilled water*
  • *Brett disappears into studio to fire up the cold press*
  • It would work well on the clever coffee dripper too, but thats at work.
  • Ok, upside down aeropress method, 17g coffee, ground in the HG-One, ice cold water added, 2 minutes 'brewing', pretty anaemic, maybe more coffee and longer steep? coldpress.jpg coldpress2.jpg coldpress3.jpg
  • Nice looking set up I could go a cold drip right about now!
  • what is the theory behind it?  slow drip with coarse grinds using cold water? I had a bottled on that Tim gave me and it was really good.
  • Yep, in this case it's: An Aeropress A soft drink bottle with a tiny pin-prick in the lid and the bottom cut off A Jar 300 ml water 200g ice Standard filter for Aeropress + additional paper filter Grind 45g of coffee, medium-fine. Mine was too fine, took about 4 hours to extract, but tastes loverly. Remove the plunger from the Aeropress and fill with coffee. Moisten, then level the coffee in the Aeropress. Moisten then place paper filter over the top of the leveled coffee Place over the jar Put the softdrink bottle (spout down) into the top of the Aeropress Fill with 200g ice and remaining water Let drip, then chill. Has come up a treat.

...and ..a genuine "Schweppes"  bottle ! ..none of the cheap "Club" or "select" brand stuff up there.  ;D   Maybe thats the secret to a better "quality" brew ?
  • wow and to think when we were kids we made our own bongs and now look where that's taken us! (or do I just speak for myself here?)
  • I dont own an aero press So that means I need to invent something  Great coffee can be had with the cold drip method and to sweeten with a little maple syrup goes down well
  • Did a batch of cold brew today. Four photos attached Beans weighed and ready for grinding Brew vessel loaded and brewing away (1 part beans, 4 parts water by weight, 8 hours brew time) Brew vessel next to high quality filtration unit Filtration in progress
  • And what did it taste like Unm? Couldn't you use a modified syphon?  ie reduce the flow somehow that it only drips slowly into the bowl?  Interesting, it would make another use for an bit of apparatus that I already have.  I do still think BrettH's cold drip has the biggest wow factor though for a DIY attempt. :)

Awww shucks  BTW.... Saw AMs wonderful new lever but due to the heat we had a coffee off the Minore.  What a beast... Just Awesome!
  • At least it went to a good home! ;)  And I think AM has improved it a lot noise wise.
  • Tastes great. Normally I expect to dilute half and half with water or  ice, but this was good straight. Possibly the high density of the peaberry had an impact on solubility. Should have mentioned, grind coarse as for French press. No need to slow flow through filter as this is an immersion brew process. The filter is just to remove last grinds and so further brewing which would taint the flavour. Oh another thing. Icing the water is pointless unless the brew chamber (and ideally) the collection vessel) is also temperature controlled. A drop of cold water will reach room temperature in seconds and is in the brew chamber for minutes at least. If you or the whole apparatus in the fridge, as many do, different story I do agree, the aeropress is a more elegant solution. Mine is very basic - functional though.
  • It would find a use for my french press UNM.  Never use it, but I have some nice cloth strainers for coffee that Jack sent me and the instructions aren't in english so I can use them. :) I'll give this a go and report back.  Are you using a light roast?
  • Is there much of a difference between cold drip and letting the grounds steep, then filtering? (My cold brew technique involves plunger, followed by aeropress of the resulting brew.)

Hi Hildy, I did a brew in the fridge in a Tupperware at the same time as running a cold brew on my DIY dripper.  The end taste was very similar... To close for me to call!
  • Best bit about the cold soak method is the volume of brew you can make.  I make 4L at a time.  Lasts about 3-4 days. Strain through chux or tea towel, quick and painless. Equipment required: 2x 5L buckets 1x 1kg ricotta strainer 1x tea towel or chux cloth 400g coffee ground for plunger 4L cold, filtered water (can even use sparkling mineral for a bit of fun)

Try it with Ginger Beer to for even more fun perhaps even an alcoholic version too (not tried this one tho yet, maybe tomorrow)

Tried various. filter or espresso style roast. My limited experience is the coffee tastes very like the whole beans smell when you open the bag, if that makes sense. Espresso brings out different characters, but I do like a cold processed coffee now and again. Easy to make an instant coffee from it too if I keep some in the fridge. Because mine is quite strong, it dilutes successfully with hot or cold water
  • This is definitely something I have to try. Have aeropress so will try Kelseys way of doing it. Do you really need the second paper filter though?  I have the metal filter on the aeropress at present. Ohhh just reading more and saw the syphon idea as well. I've never been able to get a good coffee out of the syphon so maybe turning it into a cold brew will redeem it.
  • Here is my contraption :) 45 grams of medium - coarse coffee 400 grams of water No idea if it will work but I've given it a try  ;D [attachimg=1]
  • That's fricken' awesome Nic!! Just the aesthetic melding of elements make it a work of hilarious functional art.  Using two devices associated with the citrus notes of third wave and then acknowledging that want with an citrus juice bottle feeding your Frankensyphon... Genius! Now, more wine for me!
  • Very inventive designs abound in this thread  :thumb: KK

I agree KK, and it's nice to see people using items already in their kitchen/cupboards rather than running out to spend $200. :)  :thumb:

 well I try my best to not be a sheeple Lacehim, I was seriously thinking about it when I first saw the Harios, but did reconsider when I knew I could just do it in the normal syphon anyway.
