After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Gotta love the last but though. NB: Your warranty is void if you put anything through your grinder other than coffee. FYI Craig these are the clay balls I'm using on my aquaponics.  If you want to go this route I can give you some. Personally I think it just goes to show how slack coffee equipment manufactures are in their quality control process.  You shouldn't have to process 20kg of coffee to get your grinder to grind properly.  Why can't try run them through a process to simulate this at the end of the production line?
  • I agree this should all be sorted out before burrs being sold, very slack. I tried some rice, what a bitch! I jammed the burrs and while still cranking it just slips, I finally sorted it out and ground 500grs this is after about 5kg of coffee I have good pours now but still tasteless coffee with thin creama If I want a good coffee I need to bring out the Rosco, it gets a much more syrupy darker pour with much better flavors. It will be good one day I hope I just wonder if maybe my burrs are not aligned as good as they should be?
  • Wind it down till the burrs start touching, are they only touching in one spot or do you get an even sound as you wind a full turn? There are threads on home barista on how to align if necessary
  • seems like all grinders would suffer from burr dags even smaller ones?

Why would you think that ? They are not all made by the same bunch of cowboy machinists.
  • Glad I never had these issues with my pharos, I had beautifull shots straight out of the box, Hopefully things start improving soon C-man  :tearhair:

So then it is just the Mazzer ones with the problems?

Nope, all machined parts etc all have issues to some level.  It then can be compounded by other tollarances in other parts of the machine. The biggest variable is the beans :-)

I tried that, even set all the way to zero it still turns, Hard to see much, but when set to normal espresso grind (about 1.25 turns out from zero) I can see a fairly even line of light through and around them if that means anything? Just to check again today I ground a shot with the Rosco and it was darker, more syrupy and had heaps more creama and tasted better, so it is not the beans or anything else.
  • just ran another 1.5 kgs through the grinder, making a total of 2.5kgs rice + about 5Kgs Coffee just starting to come to the party now...

    Google's ya fiend!
  • The HG one has now passed up the Rosco, The little Rosco is a great grinder and will be used for traveling now. The shots are not as dark, syrupy and do not have as much crema as the Rosco BUT the flavor is slightly better now, and it is so much quicker and easier to use. I will most likely grind some more rice to see if the crema will thicken up a bit more and hopefully I can get some fruit flavors I am always chasing.
  • Dont grind too much rice, you will blunt the burrs It'll take 4-6 months for them to slowly season fully, just enjoy the adjustment period
  • My total par boiled rice is 2.5kgs and coffee is about 7kgs now so I should stop with the rice?
  • yeah i think so, once you blunt the burrs, theres no going back, better to go in gently

sorry, but if par boiled rice blunts Tin coated steel burrs... then you have crap burrs !
  • the TiN coating is quite soft, it's not a hard coating like on motorbike forks, i could sand it off with wet and dry in one quick swipe in the shaft hole Beans blunt burrs, i've noticed my older robur burrs getting much harder to turn, so i reckon rice will blunt it a lot lot quicker

Sounds more like gold paint than any real TiN coating. ! :o ( some metal and rock cutting tools are TiN coated  for wear resistance !) A i said before,... cheap , shoddy, manufacture.
  • the rice says "par boiled" but it seems to be just as hard a normal uncooked rice. The guys at HG one recommend it and say they have inspected the burrs after with no signs of damage. for what thats worth... "On average, we noticed a reduction of 10 to 20 rotations with every box (4.25 cups) of instant rice used. On inspection of the burrs after the seasoning process, we
  • I am temped to check the burr alignment this is their instructions, not too much to go on. http://hg-one.com/the-hg-one-grinder/care-maintenance/adjusting-burr-alignment/
