Georges Premium blend Dose - 17g Tamp - Medium Milk - Famhouse Gold Pour - 25 secs for 20ml Rating - 9/10Georges Premium blend Adjusted grind slightly finer Dose - 16g Tamp - medium Pour - 30 secs for 15ml + 2nd extraction to top up to 20ml Rating - 8.2/10 The delay between 1st and 2nd extraction was approx 60 secs.
Okay: Major Tom 91DegC on PID Extra Pre-infuse and post shot pressure ramp-down Good looking shot! [embed=425,349] 9.21/10 Nice acidity at the front but the back is a bit flat tasting. Thus would be fantastic at the 2 week mark. Once again, any cafe could please a lot of peeps with this as their house blend. The milk I've used for all coffees is Maleny Full Cream Guernsey Milk. Cheers Moony!
Okay: Major Tom Once again, any cafe could please a lot of peeps with this as their house blend.
Ground Control up at South Tweed does use Major Tom as their house-blend .. which is why I came across it. The youtube vid link didn't show up on the thread. Did in edit mode.
Georges Premium blend Backed the grind setting right off to coarser. Dose - 16.2g Tamp - light Pour - 25 secs for 17ml Result - 9.25/10 Compensated for the smaller 17ml shot by using less milk .. with 2cm foam on top. This latte was much better .. as you can see. Will try a Genovese Super Brazil next .. to see if the same method/setting suits it.
Brett - next time I order Major Tom ... I shoot you up some fresh gear .. along with Georges Premium .. or whatever else I end up getting at the time .. as I'm interested in your review when they are at their peak.
Genovese Super Brazil blend Grind - same as for above Dose - 17g Tamp - Light+ Pour - 18 secs for 20ml Rating - 8.7/10 A bit too mild and lacked body This blend likes a firmer tamp and full dose. I'll keep the grind setting the same .. medium tamp and 18g dose next time, and see how that goes?
Georges Premium blend 1st was a sinker Dose - 16g Tamp - Light+ Pour - 20 secs for 20ml Rating - 8.6/10 Bugger .. thought I'd go back to see what I was doing when Georges Premium won the last smackdown. Damn .. no dose .. I didn't have any scales during that. :'( Supplies are getting down .. with all the sinkers trying to get the settings right for both the Genovese Super Brazil and Georges Premium. Considering biting the bullet and *ordering 1kg of Ground Control's Major Tom .. in advance of running out of beans - and finding myself in that 'oh no' situation ---> :tear hair: At least then I can focus on getting that mob on the money .. and enjoy some consistency for a while .. before moving on to different beans. *Done
Georges Premium blend 1st was a 16g dose and light/medium tamp - poured too quickly = sinker 2nd was 16.5g with a light/medium tamp - and was also too fast = sinker 3rd attempt Grind adjusted slightly finer. Dose - 17g Tamp - medium Pour - 25 secs for 20ml Looking promising. Rating - 9.4/10 Yep .. finally got it So glad I've cracked it .. as I thought I was going to run out of this 250g lot of beans. Phew .. how much have I got left? Popped them on the scale. Ahhh .. 38 grams .. that's enough for 2 more coffees .. and that's it. 3 cheers .. hip hip.... I guess that's a glass half-full right there folks
Footnote: [to myself] Moony .. next lot of Georges Premium - use above settings. Yep .. thanks M.. will do.
Maybe this thread should be re-named "Moon's Coffee"? ::) I have enjoyed reading the experiences and the associated ratings, but.......... :coffee: The "Ponte Vecchio Lusso - advice please?" title has wandered a little off track IMO. :stir
Maybe this thread should be re-named "Moon's Coffee"? ::)
Perhaps it could be renamed ---> ''Moon's coffee - using his Ponte Vecchio Lusso Coffee machine?'' Seems a bit long - so here's an idea .. let's cut it back to --> ''Ponte Vecchio Lusso?'' Glad you mention it though .. I have previously encouraged other members who have one of these PV Lussos to come forward and share their experiences. So far .. it appears that I am the only lucky one around here.. and the thread ends up like a personal blog .. with the occasional visitor.

Thanks for hanging in there .. this is your first contribution in this thread .. nice .. It can get lonely in here. Fact: In the 24 hours up until 1.00am this morning - this thread attracted 640 views. This is up from - 420 Thur, 300 Fri, 250 Sat, 370 Sun. Views appear to be going up .. so there must be some sort of 'appeal' going on here?

Again .. thanks for adding comment. This is always welcome. In fact .. I've bean hoping for more.. I'm not seeing where the thread has gone 'off-track' The Ponte Vechio Lusso, and of course the grinder - have bean an integral part of the coffee journey, since acquiring them If you have bean following recent posts .. you would have noticed that I mentioned that the reason why the particular bean blend did not rate well .. was that the rating was more about my preparation (include use of PV Lusso & grinder here) than the beans themselves. Even the latest addition of Brett's ratings .. has been informative for viewers of the thread .. by not only comparing our personal taste in coffee .. but how another persons preparation and execution of the extraction can alter the result significantly. Brett has a different machine .. which, as you would know .. is not a lever machine like mine. The benefit to viewers .. is to see the results in the cup can vary according to the method and equipment you use.. as well as the differences in personal taste. Brett's perspective allows a comparison .. to the PV Lusso .. which means his results are still relevant imho.. well, ok .. it's a stretch .. but I've gotta maintain the interest in the thread so that viewers don't start doing :coffee: <-- to me. lol Oh .. and then there's adding a little 'fun factor' into the equation.. which is always a good thing. I mean .. who wouldn't want to know what rating the beans would score on another coffee machine? Most people would not have a lever machine, and wondering whether to go for one, or get a standard pump machine. By seeing how Brett's Diadema e62 group PID machine (probably worth around $3,000??) produces an outcome .. results can be compared to a budget lever like my $1,400 Lusso. Viewers get to see some of the important variables between 2 different users of different coffee machines .. even though they are using the same beans. I am sending Brett some fresh Major Tom beans shortly .. so that we can both review and rate them at the same time. I'm taking a stab .. and guessing that viewers may be interested in the results .. and that may even include you? :P Come again :thumb:
Don't forget also that I used a Pavoni Lever also as well as my 3.5K E61. Can't wait for the fresh Major atom and to returning the favour. I've got a Moony roast in mind but will need a bean green order first >:D

Oh yes, of course .. your Pavoni .. which is a lever .. around $200 less than the PV Lusso.. depending on the model. The Lusso is a spring lever, whereby the force of the spring pushes the water through the cylinder and grinds for the shot, whereas the Pavoni relies on your muscle power to pull down on the lever to push the water through the grinds. Some prefer the spring .. others without. I like the spring as it lets the machine do the work .. and I can always slow the lever's movement to better control the pour. The La Pavoni is a very popular choice .. and noticed lots of people have one. The Major Tom is a pretty good indication of the coffee I like. Looking forward to the arrival of the new batch of those little beauties. ps. Apologies to Brett for underestimating the value of his 3.5K e61 PID Diadema Junior. I fell short by $500 - which is probably the extra cost for the 'PID' function.. which, admittedly .. is a big deal.
I think we need to take into consideration what the Brettman rates as a 8.5 you may rate as a 9.2 just as example regardless of the machine. Brett has much more experience with many more beans, Then again his last one was 9.2 very close to yours, so that says something. I myself enjoy this thread.

Yes .. good point. I'd imagine with more experience .. I would need to adjust my ratings downwards. Funny that my ratings have bean going up of late .. which, due to having more experience using my machine, grinder .. and improving method .. I am definitely making better coffees now. * Are the quality of the beans better? - No.* Am I dialing the grind closer to their sweet spot? - Probably.. only I'm still guessing. * Is the micro foam more consistent and better quality? - Yes * Higher quality milk? - Yes* Are my tastebuds more acutely tuned in? - Yes, but only slightly. It would certainly help if they knew what they are supposed to be sensing. Me little mates are always going in blind. * Do I know just how good the beans can taste? - No .. only what I can achieve using my equipment. * Do I know exactly when the extraction is as good as it gets on my equipment? No * Do I know what I'm doing? ??? ... err .. pass.

It will be interesting to see how it goes .. with the head to head comparison. I'm thinking it's not about who can achieve the higher rating .. but sussing out where our ratings are sitting .. based on what we are looking for .. and the importance we place on the different aspects of what the beans can produce in the cup. It is an added bonus to this experiment .. that Brett has both an expensive machine .. as well as a comparable lever machine.
You're too kind C-Man. My taste-buds are no different to anyone else's and while I may have roasted and enjoyed many different coffees over the years... I'm the guy making these coffees so perhaps a lesser rating is a reflection on me having a bad day. I suppose that's why I videoed the extractions. That way folk can see what I'm drinking as well as how I rate it. I konw the most important sense is omitted... But...It allows you all to comment on extractions and offer advice if I'm falling short of the mark. The problem may actually be the preparer I'm looking forward to the fresh stuff. We'll see if we can beat 9.2. I would have rated a Rwandan bean from BeanGreen I roasted easily a 9.5/9.6 consistently for a glorious week there oh, about a month ago. That's about as high as I've gone at home. I reckon I had a 9.8 at Venezianos once but the lady barista may have influenced the rating. It was so good I immediately ordered a second and watched her make the coffee. Poetry friends.... Poetry! I have my BeanGreen order (wow they're a slick operation) as of today so will try to do some roasting on the weekend.
Moon buy yourself a roaster... Seriously you could be venturing into a new domain & savor ring new beans wih idle self educating yourself.... Positive side save $$$ too

+678 Today I tried done of the Rwandan that I roasted on Thursday. Despite being young it was yummy! Pavoni flat white: 9.05/10 E61 PID flat white: 9.35/10 I'll try and get some to you next week Moony!
Yeah .. I will eventually, as I enjoyed the process back when I was using my popper. I am enjoying trying out the best the Pros have on offer around the traps. Waiting on the Majot Tom to arrive .. which I'm hoping will be tomorrow? I've bean using the last of Sixty West's 'The Chief' blend which hasn't bean too bad considering it was roasted on May 3rd .. 5 weeks ago. It is a blend I'd probably purchase again in the not too distant future. (they were all very good)
Major Tom - has arrived. :thumb: The fun begins. Roast date - 4th June (1 week) 1. 7.7/102. 7.9/103. 8/10 Hmm? ^ Blimey - all I can say is that things are on the improve. :tearhair:
Major Tom blend [Day 8] 2 more coffees today 1. Rating - 8.3/10 2. Rating - 8.4/10 Still working on the problem here. Is it .. a) The beans are still too young? b) Haven't dialed them in correctly? I'm thinking it is probably a bit of both .. only I'm working on 'b' a) Is it the dose? b) The tamp? c) The grind? The pour appears too thin and not continuous .. Should I be using a single fellini or the double? I have bean using the double when a, b, and c are right .. and can use the single when it appears a little 'tight' I usually look at the initial pour flow to determine whether it needs to slow down .. and if so, do the 2nd to tighten it up Looks like I'll have to try easing back the grind to coarser .. as the coffee appears lighter in colour compared to the previous batch of Major Tom .. and the flavour is milder .. which brings it back to the possibility that the beans themselves are not 'mature' enough just yet .. which I've found adds colour and flavour. I found that the grind setting for the Sixty West beans needed to be quite a bit finer than the setting for previous Major Tom and Georges Premium beans .. and now it seems that I will have to adjust it right back and adjust the setting slightly finer until I get it right. It certainly would have helped if I had marked the setting on the dial before adjusting it to suit the Sixty West beans. These grinders should have a LED gauge attached to the dial .. so that you can keep a record of the dial setting for each bean .. but I guess that would make it too easy. ::) Knowing what I know now .. I'd happily pay an extra $100 for a digital gauge .. as I can't read the increments that are on the Compak dial. I noticed on a video that one d00d had a strip of white masking tape on the dial with his settings marked on it. It looked a little messy .. only it must work ok for him. It got the 'bandaid' fix. I guess there is bound to be variations between the batches .. so a little tweaking to the setting may be necessary. With the way it is now .. it is a :head: if you have more than one type of bean .. and like to randomly change your preference often .. which is what I like to do. With a digital LED .. it would not be a problem at all.
Major Tom Ahhh .. Moony is back in business :thumb: Dose - 16.5g Tamp - Light/medium Double Fellini move Pour - 30 secs for 20ml Rating - 9.15/10 Yeah nice .. responded well to a substantial shift in the coarser direction. A bit of tweaking from here should get me right back into the 9.2s and better .. not that it really needs to be .. but I'll take it. Hmm .. must say .. that 9.15 tasted pretty damn good compared to the coffees I've bean making myself lately. Seemed like I hadn't had a really good one for a while. You beaut ^-^ *Sent Brett the Major Tom today. Looking forward to his reviews.:lamp:
Major Tom Adjusted grind a tad finer. Dose - 16.5g Tamp - Light+ Milk - FH Gold Single fellini .. after 1st drops. Pour - 25 secs for 20ml Rating - 9.35/10 Oh yeah baby! Delicious. Moony is back in coffee Heaven. :thumb:

Oooo.... Can't wait! I've sent you some home-roasted beans both so very different. The MM is darker than I generally roast it but tastes okay in my hot little pavoni.
Mmmm... MM on pavoni x2 this morning: 9.0/10 AND 9.05/10 This is an acquired taste: cinnamon, aniseed and tobacco notes in a dark chocolate wrapping... If you get it right. Gauntlet laid dooooowwwnn!!
^^^ I reckon I've got the tobacco notes covered. :thumb: I roll up a cigarette, light it up .. take a couple of puffs .. then taste the coffee 8) Do you rest them .. and for how long do you suggest? I want to give your roasted beans their best shot here. :o
Major Tom Dose - 16g (appeared a little under-dosed .. needs to be 16.5g) Tamp - Light+ (due to under-dose) Pour - 15 secs for 20ml (too fast) Rating - 8.5/10 Full superficial flavour and rich chocolate colour. The micro foam was sub-standard and bubbly .. which didn't help.
Had several Major Toms with varying results .. all below what I would have liked.. rating from 8.4 to 9.1/10 Have backed the grind off to even more coarse and varying the dose each time .. starting at 16g and increasing in increments. The pour has bean too quick of late. Latest Dose 16.9g Tamp - medium Pour - 25 secs for 20ml Rating - 9.15/10Bretts beans have just arrived .. exciting times. Thanks heaps Brett :thumb: Hmm? Must be time to go try one - MM or Rwanda? Think I'll go with the MM .. even though Brett has the 'drink from' starting tomorrow. 1 day shouldn't matter. I'll be back - with first impressions. I'll begin with same method and settings as I'm using for Major Tom.. and take it from there.
