Roughly 4 secs for my 15.8g dose. A bit hard to tell exactly because I don't hold the button down - just use a 3s and then a 2s, by which time it's well and truly done grinding.

Yeah, it's fast alright - when I seasoned the burrs with a full hopper I had a look to see how quick the PF filled. I'd put it at around 2s with a full hopper. CMan - it was a present from a friend and while I never saw coffee that cheap I love the sign.

I picked up an E10 the same as Kelsey's from the good folks @ Compak HQ Port Melbourne yesterday to trial in a cafe. Must say, I love the new software on the Essential OD - it's super easy to use and adjusting the 3 different dosage amounts is quick and precise. One of the big improvements in the new E10 is the pulse button has a much lower run time, e.g. more like a Mazzer. The light that shines on the dosing area is also pretty cool. Brett - free-dosing on large grinders can be a bit challenging due to the speed. Takes a bit of practice to know when to stop - even half a second and you can have up to a few grams. The new shorter pulse certainly helps as it's more responsive.

Agreed Jeff, I don't think I'll be free dosing any time soon, although I do plan to switch to having a full hopper and timed dosing. After playing around with a kilo of stale beans, I can see the value in having a weight of beans on the burrs, as opposed to the popcorning I get single dosing. Single dosing works tho, and works well. I find that using the default 3s setting gets through the actual grind, then a couple of pulses dislodges most of the rest. I shined a torch up the chute to check out the retention - there was some, which after sweeping out and weighing amounted to .9g. No biggie. There is clumping, but it's minimal and I'm not convinced that all types of clumping are a problem anyway - most break up with a tap of the PF on the bench and I'm not getting any channeling. I'm looking forward to the holidays so I have some time to tear down my Londinium and give it a service and throw on some of the upgrades Reiss has sent over. At the same time I'll be playing with timed dosing and learning the software of the grinder. Hopefully that means it will be a very caffeinated christmas!

Please find enclosed my nomination for joining the LCGOC. The hopper was way to big and had some unsightly wear and tear marks that I could do without. Might have been a bit severe with the reduction though. I didn't think the lid would fit a partial reduction in height because the top was recessed in diameter for the lid. So I went as low as funnel start to ensure a fit. From the user point of view, I noticed a big improvement with the pour over the Mazzer Mini after a few setting corrections. One thing that I found different was that no matter what I did, I couldn't grind fine enough on the mini to get a good pour of the Monsoon Malabar/ With the BNZ I almost choked the Strega! :o

Yep, maybe a little on the radical side Chester, but it will still hold 150+gms with the lid on. Can't see myself making that many coffees in one session too often. As I said earlier, the hopper had several noticeable scuff marks around it and the size sort of took the eye away from the Strega.

And with the LEDs and mirror to the side, above and back of it........ well, it was an easy decision to make IMO. Kev

Lamkin Lane has recently upgraded from Roburs to the new Compak E10 Conics, in the 'Master' configuration - so pretty much the same as mine but with a slightly faster motor. They've given me some invaluable advice and I've now switched from single-dosing to just filling up the hopper (which is wrapped in aluminium foil to prevent light-spoilage). I've programmed the #1 dosing option to grind for 1.9s and I've found that every five notches on the grind adjustment ring requires a commensurate change of about .1s to accommodate the change. Works beautifully. A tap on the on-demand button and I get a 1.9s grind that half-fills the PF and a few taps to collapse the super-fluffy grinds. Another 1.9s, another tap before tamping and we're good to go. The grinder seems to throw right for me, and now that I've discovered that it's making a lot less mess.

The current condition of the AU$ against the US would make buying one from OE a bit pricey ATM. I had bought an OE dosing funnel to overcome the MMM (Mazzer Mini Mess) only to find it wouldn't fit under the dosing lever when operating. Although it does fit under the BNZ, my current routine finds it easier dosing into small round glass dish (to check the weight) then using the dosing funnel on the pf, tip the grounds in, one or two taps to settle in the basket, then tamp. And, like others in this club, and with almost 2 weeks of using the BNZ, I am noticing a substantial quality/taste improvement in the cup. :P

Hi Kev I made a chute with some thicker but still easily bendable aluminium You need to remove the bottom plate and mould it to shape and then refit the bottom plate When the bottom plate in screwed in it also holds the alloy chute in place KK [attachimg=1]

I was going to ask for a pic of your chute after you had mentioned it in an earlier post to me, but forgot. Can't get much more "homemade" looking than that. What size ball pane hammer did you use? :rofl: Seriously though and pardon all the questions, how does hold in place? Is there a lip flanged at the top to hold it between the bottom plate and the main body? Does it cause grind retention at the top of the chute? I suppose when the bottom plate is removed, it will soon become blindingly obvious (to an ex boilermaker). ;D Kev

Mazzer Kold Electronic. One of the primary challenges to busy cafes is maintaining consistency when orders are flowing fast. Part skill and part equipment, the barista needs to be aware of what is happening to the coffee and in particular the grinder. These days, we take it as a given that multi-boiler, PID machines remain thermally stable. Worrying about recovery time and shot temps is quite rare unless you are trying to use a 2-group when you should have a 3-group. If you have a quality brand machine and it is setup correctly, with good water filters and clean, then you really don't need to do much except make sure you have the temp correct for the way the coffee is running, e.g. you know the drill, a 1-Deg change can make a difference. Attention turns to the shot times, dose weights and converted volumes - it's here that the grinder tends to let you down. We have some pretty busy cafes that push Robur-E's beyond the optimal operating conditions - 3 or 4 kilos an hour causes excessive heat build up resulting in the need to continually set the grind setting a fraction finer throughout the day - only to wind it back at night and start again the next morning. This is a frustrating exercise and pushes the limits of quality and speed. We have tried a few alternatives over the last 6 months. The NS Mythios-1 Clima Pro had all the hallmarks of a grinder that would be perfect for cafes - minimal retention, clean + perfect dosing and special treatment of heat build-up. However, the results in the cup where not comparable with the large Compak and Mazzer conicals. In the last fortnight, we have run a new Mazzer Kold Electronic on the House coffee in a busy cafe. This is a relatively new concept from Mazzer, although it has been a long time coming. The Kold is not the prettiest looking grinder, but it's built-for-purpose components from the Robur to implement a belt-drive system that is mounted at an offset to create space so the conductive heat from the motor does not rise up and heat the grind-set - a good idea. Performance-wise, we have found the dose is relatively consistent, e.g. within 0.75g which puts it slightly improved upon the Robur-E it replaced (which was up to 0.9g variance). The Kold also appears to be slightly better at dosing into the portafilter without excessive waste - why I don't know as it's basically the Robur-E dosing system (perhaps it's just an illusion and we are in fact still in the "honeymoon" phase). Is it worth the premium over the Robur ? maybe. It's a question that only a busy cafe can answer - if you struggle to achieve consistency when under the pump, then anything (and everything) you can do to improve is worth it.......so in that context it is a resounding YES.

Great contribution Jeff, thank you. I thought that Cimbali had a legacy belt-drive conical/plate grinder for exactly that reason. The Mazzer is obviously in a different class but it begs the question why aren't all the big manufacturers offering this as opposed to the 3 Phase behemoths.

A visitor to our house, who is a dear friend and has a somewhat annoying propensity to fiddle with my gear without asking......... on Friday morning thought it was a you-beaut new automatic pod machine and proceeded to place a cup under the grinder's dosing cone............turning around to ask "what button do I press for a larr-taay"...... :rofl:

GOLD!!! The only better ending to the story would have a button press and a demitasse full of grounds. When questioned as to 'how do I drink that" the obvious answer is :"look, drinking dry coffee grounds isn't great coffee but it certianly beats Nespresso!'

Applying for membership . Have added a Mazzer Robur to my bench . I am amazed at the difference in the speed of grind and the added flavours coming from my Strega in triple restretos :coffee2:
