After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Bar Open 3.00pm

edited January 1970 in Off-topic
P  :)
Thought that this topic could be used on those afternoons especially towards the end of the week, when all else is not worth the effort.
However, the bar must be officially open. ;D
Usually by 3pm I am over espresso for the day.
What do you reckon. ???
JD 8)
After having a couple of glasses of Shiraz,
I will start by asking if anyone has checked out the latest BEEM AR competition, about trying to find out where is the best caf and who is the best B.
Some great prizes for this gig. ;D Heaps of coffee machines and a trip to the world titles. Unfortunatley I do not think that the winner gets the chance to pull any shots at the WBC.

  • JD Instead of a blanket 3pm start, why not stagger it through the week - ie. 5pm on Mondays (given you normally effectively start the day later) down to about 1pm on Fridays? BEEM AR?? - is that BMW calloquialised? P  ;D
  • P Thats fine with me. BeeM ah UU that is them. JD
  • So JD, where is this Beemaaaaaaaahhhh comp being held? Details, details?? P
  • P I will send you the link. JD
  • I wonder how some cafe's 'registered' to be on the list??
  • P Should we be offended that Chez Nous and Chez Moi were not included on the list. I am sure that the coffee we serve in our establishments would be up there with the best of them. Maybe we can vote for ourselves???? What was your address again? JD
  • Even better, I will track down the address for GJ in Crows Nest - how's that! Unfortunately we don't have a Starschmucks in this locality. In any event, I can't vouch for my coffee being better, but at least I try (in fact, many people often say I am trying  ;D)
  • It does not have to be much better than to be better than most 8) Next time I am in CN I will check out GJ's. I will forward a vote for Chez Vous (sorry not Chez Nous) Vous=you nous=us moi=me chez=house Still waiting for the pinot
  • Dissapointed.... I'd expect Hyundai to have Sunbeam as a partner....
  • I think Hyundai is in bed with Breville.
  • Pab I think you missed it!! Sun beam and beam ah Both makers fine domestic appliances.
  • mmm... a very tenuous and sublime link. Too sublime for the likes of Sunbeam. Maybe in the 70's they could've had a joint venture with the Holden Sunbird!!!
  • Honestly you blokes (oh, and you girls...you know, gotta be fair to both genders (no "sex" please) and all that), Do you not think that this coffee lifestyle thing is getting a bit out of hand? If the marketing monkeys at the BEE EMME VOO factory are trying to get into bed with the coffee / barrister / thing, it's getting far too serious. Would someone please hand me either of: a) a beer (old style reshes pilsener will do) b) a glass of good wine (label unimportant as long as is good) OR c) a cup of good tea (yes tea, gasp horror), because coffee is being overtaken by lifestyle junkies and snobs. Surely an association between bee-mar and barrister competitions proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt. And yes, I hopes ya's all chokes on ya's biscottis! G. list cynic.
  • I think you have tamped the nail on the head, Gonzo. You read articles about 'rockstar baristas', etc, EMO's basically being pumped up to a level beyond what they are. In my mind, comparing them to wine, their job should be similar to that of a sommelier (in a way), but are often talked about as if they are wine makers. At the end of the day, and I think as FC said, coffee is a processed beverage, where the end supplier of the product is heaped praise when they, heaven forbid, provide the customer with what they asked for - an espresso! In the end, it appears that the standard EMO screws up the process, and those who achieve bare minimum are lauded as gods. Why? Because the McMarketing machine of the coffee heavyweights (and we all know who they are) are painting the act of having 30 mls of hot liquid as a sublime cultural experience, akin to skiing Bamf, shopping in Milan, and having a Viente Double Mocha Coconut Skim Decaf Latte at Starschmucks. Having ranted all that, it is also in part the fault of Mr & Mrs Genericwannabe who think that life is epitomised by a cardboard takeaway cup in one hand, and a colour screen mobile phone in the other (obviously wearing either the generic striped shirt/'manufactured faded' jeans or tight, off shoulder top/low cut pant ensem) who's only purpose in life is to garner as much as possible. The one thing I would question Gonzo on is his choice of beer. Obviously, given that Reschs Smooth Black Ale is no longer available, why wouldn't you go for Tooheys Old/Carlton Black? But that just wouldn't be fashionable, would it? P PS Gonzo, I truly question the integrity of your cynicism!  8)
  • Too'ees OLD is a fine beverage but not what it used to be...then again neither is reshes pils'ner. Why I remember a time before all this lifestyle "specialty" beer when the old pils'ner was king amongst beers, now sadly reduced to run of the mill beer that makes you want to buy the specialty stuff. See now that's marketing, make the standard stuff to "a standard" where you have to go looking for the "specialty" item and pay the extra...kind of like the PMG / ah sorry Telecom / ah sorry Telstra, where if public opinion doesnt want it sold off, you run it into the ground, cut staff to a 1/4 of what it should be, give the worst possible service, the clients leave it in droves, then you have the excuse to sell it. That's good marketing is it not? G. and yes I still hope yas all chokes on ya biscuits oops I mean...biscotti....Ciao, oops sorry I mean...see ya.
  • I wonder when Ian Thorpe will start selling coffee.... Maconna's Metro Blend full of body but little substance!! He is not a beautiful and unique snowflake!!!
  • this evening I was priveleged to watch one of these holiday destination programmes (programs?). The presenter went to Bora Bora and had a massage with wait for it, a mixture of ...coffee...and mud.     gimme a break...please, somebody...please...stop it...wonder if the coffee was...DOUBLE roasted...that's better than normal roasting....isn't it? somebody please...stop it. G.   choking on my after dinner cup of tea and biscuits...oops I mean biscotti. Wonder if my bikkies were double baked?
  • Gonzo Was it an instant ;D coffee massage ??? Could work well in competitions, instead of a signature drink why not offer the judges a signature massage ??? JD
  • There's a couple of places in Slurry Hills which offer signature massages! I doubt they would be very cheap though........so I have heard, of course.
  • P You forgot to mention if they do coffee ;D
  • JD, apparently that's $20 extra   8) (So I am told)
  • P I hear that they use the same chocolate for the latte art as they do for the body painting ::) JD ;) I know it has gone 3 and the bar is about to open :-/
  • Yes but is their coffee double brewed? (I'm going home now and have me a double scotch). G. ah, I know its after 3, but does your bar operate, like, on 16 or 18 bars?
  • It's now 3.45 pm EST on Friday and the bar is officially open...no post is too stupid or trivial - this is your chance to claim immortality! By the way, we're now two weeks off closing the 'best' headline competition - note the very special prize offered by Coffeetraining.com. - see thread on Fun Stuff! Cheers Admin
  • thought I'd get in before Pat... Two peanuts walk into a bar... one was a-salted!!!!
  • A guy walks into a bar.................. ........................................ ........................and says ouch!!!
  • Hey - Patrick - I think you've just attained immortality - the 'doesn't matter how stupid or trivial...'idea only counts for Friday afternoons - this one's truly pathetic, but it's not Friday! -A
  • Thanks Admin! Having attained immortality, I now have the quinella - Immortality & Immorality! Friday afternoon/Monday morning, surely one's brain is often operating at the same capacity at those two times?? P
  • Hey guys - anyone think they can get a pic of Jennifer Hawkins' sarong (or lack of) by 3.00pm? If so, promise I'll find a way to post it, to the benefit of all members! -A
  • Oh, and big cheerio to Fresh for the 250gms of beans as my prize for the last comp. I had to rush to finish 500gms of other beans I had there. Beautiful roast - I made machiattos (sp) last night, and they had a great bitterness which was perfectly balanced. Very good.  ;D P
