Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Sanremo Burrs?

I'm Facebook buddies with Sasa Sestic and he's over at Sanremo HQ this week and today he posted a picture of some burrs they are testing.

See attached.

The yellow ones are probably titanium but not sure what the purple ones are. Any metallurgy experts here that can possibly identify the material of these burrs by just looking at them?

Interesting to see what they (Sanremo) are up to as this unfolds.

    hard to tell just by looking at them but going by shape alone they dont look anything out of the ordinary if i had to hazard a guess id say they made from forged steel but time will tell! P

    I'd be surprised... I reckon the silver/purple ones are steel and the yellow ones are TiN coated.

    I've messaged Sasa and I'm just waiting for a response but Im not holding my breath. Looks like he's having fun on his 7 week coffee tour in Europe.

    Yes, not "sanremo burrs". Golden coloured are titanium and grey coloured are the regular hardened steel type. I think you will find they probably only look purple because of the lighting, but happy for someone to correct me if they have some more knowledge. As an aside, the titanium plates last significantly longer in use than conical burrs do. Macap has already been offering titanium for around 2 years. The only "testing" required, is market testing to see if clients are prepared to pay the significantly bigger price for the "better" plates (where "better" equates to the life of the plates not the quality of the grinds, which is a given by the time the plates become available for sale, otherwise the grinder manufacturers would not be offering them (yet). In the case of Macap the titaniums cant be retro fitted to grinders having regular hardened plates. The assembly would need to be modified to suit. So you have to buy the "titanum grinder" to start with. Also it would appear (to me) that they are worth the extra dollars, because it allows roasters or bean suppliers some greater peace of mind given that it takes significantly longer for the titanium plates to wear out and start wrecking the coffee (which the roaster is then blamed for, despite that the client should be able to manage their own work stations and know when plates need to be replaced instead of working with worn out plates, wrecking the coffee, then passing the blame for that up the line...).
