Celebrity endorsements: George Cluny for Nespresso

edited November 2015 in Off-topic
First it was Al Pacino for Vittoria, and as dR said, they've also been running the George Cluny ads for Nespresso. Seems this is the latest one out of the US!

or something else... ahem... moving right along nothing to see here thank you!
  • been around since Roman times as well - think they call it 'payment in kind'... ;)
  • apparently [according to the Oprah celebrity team] we all "hang out at
  • that's pretty funny dR - most people i know wouldn't be seen dead 'hanging out in a hip joint like a McCafe' - not sure about you, but I'm over this Oprah thing, and it hasn't even started yet!! :o
  • Bickmore, Ch 10 and Oprah have been getting a roasting in the press over this one. Cash for comments anyone. A fluff piece that is actually a paid add for a sponsor of the show :( Interesting to know how the non coffee obsessed masses feel about MuckCafe being called hip and the place to go  ???
  • I think Sprduge has hit the nail on the head with this one - http://sprudge.com/the-flat-white-op.html

I don't think you can put this in the same basket as what John Laws did and what Alan Jones continues to do. For a start, I would imagine that media laws are completely different in the USA; and this promotion of McCafe is part of a wider commercial agreement between McDonald's and Harpo productions. The fact that it has been ridiculed by all and sundry here in Australia speaks volumes for how advanced our coffee market is compared to many other countries and I think is something we can be proud of and excited about. The vast majority of Americans that I have met in the USA already have no clue what or where Australia is. Seeing something familiar (and a little bit fancy ;) ) might actually help them feel comfortable enough to visit our fantastic country.
  • actually, that's pretty funny 'MuckCafe' ... along with Starchucks, maybe we should have a competition for the best name for all the chains!! A :D
  • They dont even make burgers that well, compared to the local fish, chips and burger shop KK

That's an understatement, was in Adelaide last week and needed something quick for lunch, the arches happened to be across the road, so passed through the the portal and ordered one of their delectable offerings, think it was an angry angus whopper stopper or some such idiotic name that makes an adult feel like a bloody simpleton when ordering. What was it like, in two words, bloody terrible, didn't order a drink, had a bottle of water in the car, shame I didn't have a bottle of Listerene to get rid of the taste and a couple of Mylanta to combat the resulting indigestion 15 mins later. :P
  • just thought I'd resurrect this with a couple of the latest online ads for Nespresso… wish they spent as much money on their coffee as they did on their advertising  :(
  • I'm told they spend a fortune on their coffee and high-value coffees at that.  I reckon their issue is not the money spent the but return on quality, ie... If only they could convert the potential of their raw purchases!!  Dreadful stuff really!

Have to say that their showrooms at the Emporium here in Melbourne are very well presented - had a couple of Nespresso coffees at my mums house in new Zealand recently and I have to say that in terms of repeatable quality they were pretty good -  I've certainly had a lot worse coffee from some hipster cafes and recently too !
  • I tend to agree....it wont be the ethical quality of the coffee they use. It will instead be their understanding of the character that any particular market wants in its (cup of) coffee. After that, they offer the convenience factor, and their marketing has been very long term and they are now very much reaping the benefits of that. In reality its not actually about "the coffee", although some people may think it is... Are they competing with the high quality fresh roast coffee market? Or the high end equipment market? Perhaps, but only in a small way. They are probably more competing with the instant market, and certainly with the automatic machine market which as a consequence is taking a pounding. So all those that complain that automatic espresso machines dont make the best espresso or that it isnt "real" esporesso......is the competition to that (Nespresso) any better? Celebrities are....celebrities ! They arent coffee people. So what would they know (or even care)? Who cares, just give them the money, and let them do their stuff! It works for a lot of people  ;).

Reckon your right on the money Pat, we coffee aficionado's tend to get a little precious at times. Whilst I certainly have a preference for good espresso, there are times when all that is available is pod or instant, I'll accept whats on offer and drink it without complaint, although I certainly have gained a reputation among friends who will almost apologetically offer me their humble brew with a statement something like "I know it won't be up to your standard" it's a reality check, when this happens, I realise that perhaps I have come across as (a bit up myself) as far as coffee is concerned. ::)

Mate.... Precious and up myself are my reasons for being here.  Moreover, I'd drink tea rather than drink bad coffee and my mates Nespresso is bad coffee.  Perhaps his machine is faulty but it's dreadful and it lingers.  Life is too short!

So there you go, I'd drink stagnant swamp water in preference to tea, dreadful stuff in my opinion. We certainly are different, one mans meat is another mans poison. :)
  • I'd drink a good instant in preference to some of the nespresso offerings, which simply don't appeal to me in terms of what I expect from a good "fresh" coffee. Not trying to be nasty at all, just stating an individual preference. To my way of thinking nespresso is "designed" to have people go from nescafe to another nestles product in the search for something more, rather than having people go elsewhere (ie outside the nestle stable). They're on a winner with the "convenience" factor, as there are plenty of people that can't handle a regular manual espresso machine and grinder and all that involves....so as already stated not really taking market from high end manual coffee equipment, but certainly taking it from "bean to cup" automatics. George is laughing all the way to the bank (as is nestle).
