After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

  • Very nice KK. I'll see you, and raise you - here's my 24ct bling :) e679c052b68b93f1acd93d61c216492d.jpg
  • Oh my ..... I didn't even think that was possible! You Didnt buy it off a Saudi prince by any chance? Dare I ask how much that would set one back financially? Good to know you have diversified your super portfolio with gold!
  • Just teasing.  They are 24ct gold plated ;)
  • Wow... I'd worry about scratches!  Also how does it go in the dishwasher?? KIDDING!
  • Are they for decorative purposes Paul? What basket do you have in the portafilter out of interest ?
  • Is there a school of thought that says if the tampers are to much of a snug fit that you bring into equation a vacuum like pull when removing the tamper thus disturbing the puck?
  • Absolutely!  Trick is to buy, for instance a specially machined tamper or matching tamper/ assets from the same manufacturer i.e Paesedo etc
  • Yep, a 58.5mm tamper matched to a 58.5 precision basket is the way to go. Cheers, Paul
  • Post your findings or it never happened ;)

Pesado. Pesado baskets are made by IMS.
  • Yesterday I was visiting a client as its a regular event Close by I stopped in quickly to sponsor Barazi to see if they had any VST baskets The answer is yes they stocked VST and Pullman also the standard baskets So today I made a quick visit with my Pulman tamper to see if it would fit any of the VST baskets I tried and tried without success all were to small Then I was offered an old stock unit from 2013 to try - BINGO the tamper fitted beautifully So I purchased it and drive it home for testing Strega is warming up as I post and a report will be posted in due time So for now I will post a couple of photos KK
  • How did you go KK ? Notice much of a discernable difference with the VST's?

Truth be told I haven't noticed any difference in taste, however the espresso body texture is a little thicker Preparation had to be adjusted - as in the grind needed to be made finer to get the same results Normally I prefer a courser grind and a harder tamp for better flavour extraction on my preferred roast depth I will revisit again on my next roast - making it a little lighter and give it another test  KK
  • I taste a discernible difference between the VST and the Pasedo but that's because the Pasedo is 22g a opposed to 18g.  I'd wager a 22g VST would have no taste difference. If you're on the money KK, you're on the money!  Folks have said that the VST is not easy to use compared to standard baskets.  They require much more exacting distribution dosing and tamp.  If I was doing 300 coffee shots are day I too would certainly fits the VST and go standard.  As we are no we can enjoy a bit of diagnostics with our hobby.
  • My change "from" basket is a highly regarded Synesso basket sought after well before IMS or VST Prior to that I had a La Marzocco basket with a standard Pulman tamper matched set (now sold) The taste observations are not that different to me because I'm going from an already good basket to a basket with more precision in its manufacture I had the VST's measure after the first shot, and actually found it easy to use KK
  • A quick update on the VST After a one month test to evaluate the new basket, tonight I reinstalled the Synesso basket Between the 2 and keeping in mind that the Synesso predates the VST by several years and was the go to basket of that time Overall performance and extraction the VST and Synesso are even The VST only likes a particular roast depth but the Synesso extracts better with all roasted beans The VST over the whole month was easy to use but the coffee flavours were not as defined The Synesso with its broader coffee extractions had better tasting shots So I left the decision on which basket to install to my taste buds and the Synesso is back in use KK
  • Interesting!  I ditched my Synesso baskets long ago.  I might have to dig them out of the drawer.  Good update!
  • Others may find a different result due to different machines KK
