After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Was just browsing on a different forum.............

    True.  No freedom of choice in N.K.  :-X  It's probably Blend 43 or nothing and maybe not even that......coffee would be the least of their problems unfortunately

    My issue with the other place was that the quality of the product/s offered didn't match the price charged or live up to the sycophantic hype driven by certain financial partners.  When authenticity is lost so is trust and truth. You'll get honest opinions here... even when you don't want them :D

    Brett didn't say what other place he was referring to either.  There's a 100% chance you are correct but I never said ;). We have plenty of members who enjoy a number of forums and that's terrific.  The more the merrier... he says with finger poised over the delete button for the spammers!

    I must admit I thought you guys were overreacting for a while after I joined up here. Living in NZ means I haven't tried greens from any of the Aussie green suppliers referred to so I couldn't comment on that side of things. And all the other stuff about attitudes and opinions didn't bother me much as I can handle a good keyboard rumble without getting upset. However I've spent the last 12-18 months trying to become more educated about everything coffee as I have a strong desire to enter the industry. As I've learned more I've come to realise just how little some of those preaching the gospel on other forums really know. They are often highly opinionated and those opinions are often based on old or incorrect information. It's also made me realise why you don't see many professionals on such forums (other than sponsors). There is a huge difference between the domestic coffee market and the pros, even when talking about fairly interested home users with $6000 worth of equipment. That's also why I realise I'm never gonna learn anything by watching WLL or SCG YouTube vids anymore. They're actually quite painful to watch, cringeworthy stuff. I won't quit being involved in other forums, but my involvement will only extend to trying to help people genuinely asking for advice or reading quietly without commenting (or giving some of the more righteous members a fair bit of grief. LOL). Like Lloyd I like it here, will definitely be around for a while, and hope I can contribute in a more meaningful way in the future as I learn more about the wonderful world of coffee.

    Well spotted Leroy! My biggest grip I suppose was the peddling of myths and suppositions to promote and defame equipment.  One could usually see the truth by searching who ranged what :D

    Not sure I should have started this thread but anyway........my ability to put ideas into words is not one of my strong points.  I know very little (or zero) in comparison to the majority of you here about coffee and the various properties of different beans, except that I enjoy it too much.  :)  I appreciate a good barista made coffee, having given up instant long ago.  Better still would be the ability to make good coffee at home as the $$$ spent at coffee shops adds up. I have had some excellent, unbiased advice previously from LeroyC regarding choices to make - unbiased being one of the keywords.  I reread it recently so it is much appreciated.  The challenge in the last few months is trying to choose the right BRAND of machine and grinder.  The more I research, the harder it is to choose.  I want to get it right first time and not spend a few thousand and make the wrong choice.  We previously had a consumer "espresso machine" which made very ordinary coffee.  It was good practice if nothing else.  :doh: Thanks in advance for any advice  :).

    Lloyd......also bear in mind there are not many wrong choices these days when it comes to equipment - especially when you go up in the performance categories, differences are minor/cosmetic/nuances, etc. They can all make good, even great coffee in the right hands. I can spend $250K on a roaster and it's still got plenty of problems long after it's been installed and commissioned - it's what you make of the situation and how you adapt. having played with just about every bit of kit released in the last 20 years, I roll my eyes at the ridiculously amplified, embellished, nonsense often sprouted by the "one eyed" brigade. That is, those that seem intent on rubbishing all other options except for the brilliant decisions they themselves had made in choosing, or even selling gear. Generally, I regard these people as proud parents with a new born child, except they themselves become the child when it comes to describing how and why when it comes to coffee equipment. It's the sheer volume of this nonsense that breeds abnormal levels of fear and insecurity in a new buyer's mind. Coffee is my business and I think about coffee all my waking hours, but I can't stand reading utter shite about equipment. Here are a few considerations. There are reliability issues with the most famous of brands......yep, that's right there are components that fail unexpectedly, regardless of all the engineering and evolution of the brand's equipment. Just like BMW, Mercedes or Audi you will find horror ownership and service history stories easily on the internet. Read enough of them and you'll never buy a car with those badges. No amount of research can help you in such cases and nobody can tell you upfront what the precise life-cycle costs will be for a specific brand of luxury vehicle, so the same rules apply for coffee equipment. There is no wrong decision and no regret. When faced with choices, you can only rely upon the facts that are available and separating facts from opinions. If the decision has a more emotive element such as style or appearance, then let it be emotional and as KK has said, nothing else matters. It's only coffee equipment, not a career change or life partner.
