After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Does not matter if you are in a cafe using them full-speed, Roburs are bloody messy - both doser and the electronic. The #1 gripe of any cafe owner is the mess and wastage from a Robur - among other things to whinge about.....even when they get to use them completely free of charge !.
Interesting and yet the mod done properly is relatively easy and painless and effective. My temporary cardboard has fixed it entirely but I am going to follow KK and do it properly using heavy duty AL foil to make it permanent. That is very Italian thing to not do though. G
  • Photos of the Mazzer Doser Chute mod  :thumb: Instructions To make a Mazzer grounds doser chute guide in the same manner as the last 2 grinders I have owned You need some thick alloy foil but can still be cut with scissors ( about the thickness of 2 sheets of paper) 2 x Allen key screws hold the thwacker handle assembly Remove that and — Make a paper template first and then cut the foil to fit Took me 20/30 min Good thing about this alloy foil material is that it’s easy to bend & cut to shape KK
  • Looks like a bought one!
  • Yup, KK has done a good job. Australian made too,  no nasty imported from China stuff. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  • I’m copy and pasting this from Home Barista. It explains why conicals are so consistent and easy to adjust relative to flat burr grinders... is a technical explanation from the Titan grinder thread... Yer all wrong. It's simple geometry. The threading on the grind adjustment collar between a Robur and a Super Jolly have a very similar pitch. In other words, one 360-degree rotation of the grind adjustment collar results in the same vertical movement of the upper burr set. However, flat burrs sit completely parallel to each other. They're like a sandwich. When you move the upper burr set, say 0.10 mm vertically, the gap/distance between the burrs at the final cutting edges moves 0.10 mm apart from one another. In a conical burr grinder, the grinder burrs are configured significantly differently, with the cutting edges converging at the "grind gap" at diagonal angles. 0.10 mm of upper burr movement does NOT widen the gap between the final cutting edges by 0.10 mm. It's something fairly smaller. Anyone who's seen conical burrs (esp. Kony or Robur burrs) and flat (SJ) burrs can, I believe, visualize what I'm talking about. It's sort of hard to explain. (illustrations would help... but I'm too lazy) That's why conicals "need less adjustment" than flat burr grinders. At espresso-grind fineness, one radial unit of collar adjustment/movement on a SJ equals about (just a guesstimate based on extensive experience) 3 to 5 units of movement on a Robur, when adjusting for flow rate. • Hi Grant, Good to see you here  :D I think another piece of the puzzle is the particle size distribution. Flat tends to have a sharper and taller peak. So when you move the burrs gap, the peak shifts more easily and more significantly. Whereas with the conical, you have a wide (relatively) particle size distribution. Moving the burrs gap will only move a tiny fraction of that wide hump. It's analogous to trying to aim a bull-eye with a small bullet (narrow and targeted), versus a shotgun that covers a wide area. It's much easier to hit your target with the latter. Just some pseudoscience  from too much caffeine  9338_10093_bildschirmfoto_2015-12-06_um_12.png
  • The difference in grind sensitivity due to geometry is large while the Robur overlaps with flat burr grinders including the SJ in size distribution so I would expect some effect but not much. Increased size distribution probably has positives as well as negatives and likely changes with different grind settings. Sitting here at Miss Maud’s. They use a doser Robur as main machine and doser Major as backup.18c7fa46be607315d4f79759d229160a.jpg Edit: I wouldn't want to be too dogmatic about the whole thing though but these grind distributions themselves will probably vary, maybe a lot depending on the grind attempted. I also think the large diameter and sheer size of the burr assembly and the precision of it have an effect too. I have a size distribution chart for the Gorilla burrs made for the Robur. Quite different. I do like the grind I get from the Robur though, I can see why cafes like it, easy.
  • I have used both burr type grinders side by side for some time They were Mazzer Major & BNZ MD74 In the end I chose the Conical because it produced the best flavour for my pallet And secondly the Conical is easier to adjust and control KK
  • Would a portafilter funnel not reduce the mess made when using the dosed on a Robur? There’s plenty available on the market these days. I have an Orphan Espresso one and always use it, it’s brilliant.

Not sure if one of those funnels will completely do the job ? Have seen them but I haven’t tried one so I can’t comment on the affectivness. For me it’s much easier to mod the grinder and then once done you can forget it No need to find an attachment Update Since I made the modification, the work area is 99.8% cleaner Can’t complain about that 👍🏼 KK
  • Thanks to Koffee Kosmo for the funnel for my Robur. It works a treat! It is a snug fit but I waste practically nothing. Very tidy and it fixes the Robur's only issue which is an annoying habit of throwing to the left from the doser. The Mazzer engineer who designed the Robur doser probably has a white stick and dark glasses I suspect. It would have been so easy to fix this by Mazzer. The Robur though is an absolute JOY to use. Amazing machine and hands down the last grinder I will ever buy. This one issue is now solv-ed as Inspector Clouseau would say...:)
  • You did a great job at fitting the funnel @inspectorgadget 🔥 If anyone needs some of that alloy foil , I have obtained some more and can send some free to anyone that needs it for a doser funnel And if the grinder is a mazzer I can precut ✅ KK
  • Ah nice that's great to hear! I love a good mod :)
  • Sounds and looks like a must-do. Great job KK

Hi KK: Well you were right just two screws on the bottom to lift the assembly out. The only tricky bit is that you get it nice and even so that it is a cylinder rather than a cone. The bottom of the funnel or cyclinder is close to the top of the portafilter with maybe 5mm to spare. This is interesting. I was going to refit it but left it as it resulted in practically no wastage and did it's job well. I think I wasted a lot more coffee on my GOD Macap M4D. The Robur and Kony are both pretty amazing machines and easy to live with now that the mess factor has been almost zeroed out. Thanks to you again. G
  • The gap I currently have between the top of the PF and the end of the funnel is about 8 to 10mm At first the gap was about 4mm and as I’m older and my movements are not as precise I decided to trim it a little That’s the beauty of the design as it’s fully modifiable to your personal preferences KK
  • unfortunately i couldnt fit the robur under my bench so had to settle for the kony-e Have had it now for a couple years and do not regret it at all, very clean in operation with no mess, no matter if i am dosing into the portafilter or dosing cup.
  • The Kony-E is no slouch and a beautiful grinder Can’t argue with your choice KK
  • I got this beast from my coffee suppler recently, it's not the prettiest grinder I've laid eyes on, but it's not too ugly, and it's no slouch when it comes to making beautiful coffee, as the large burr set turns slowly so as not to overheat the coffee !
  • sorry for the sideways posting not sure why that happened but it doesnt change the fact that I get a damn fine extraction from this beast and I love that when i'\Im busy I can run a couple of shots at the same time for fast dosing - and unlike some grinders (no names mentioned!) it doses straight into the basket with very little wastage!!! P
  • Looks good!  Is it a Chinese made machine or Euro?
  • I can make a funnel for you as per my post above Pat Even though you say you have clean dosing  :stir Still it’s good to hear that your grinder is working to your satisfaction I have always preferred doser grinders - not that I have anything against doserless KK
  • That looks like a beast! Enjoy! (I've always secretly loved dosers... the tactile feel of the "thwack thwack" is very fun!)
  • ok a bit of research reveals that it's actually a rebranded Fiorenzato - which explains the build quality and the very smooth action!

Yep... that sounds right. Looks like the F5 I had for years but with a souped-up burr set. Enjoy!

it's a beast alright it's on par 8n size (and quality) with Mazer  Robar (IMHO) Ive just paired it with a 22g VST basket and a single coffee handle and the resulting coffee is sublime!
  • KK and myself have two new Roburs bought back in September 2017 so almost two years old. I joke about whether his Robur has worn out yet... ;D He did kindly send me a heavy Aluminium foil chute for the Robur as it does throw left as most dosers do. It definitely fixed that issue. I love it even though it is a bit on the big side. The size though is more a problem for others. Recently I floated the idea of getting the Mazzer Mini and my wife said 'why'. KK said 'KEEP THE ROBUR'. I have kept the Robur as really these big conicals are amazing and not just in size. They are quiet, quick and give great results. It still amazes me just how it keeps the grind setting. It is only adjusted over a very small range and infrequently. I have ordered an IMS basket 24.5mm instead of 26.5 to suit my Wega Mini Nova classic to reduce caffeine intake. Meanwhile I'm using the standard Wega basket and portafilter. Very nice all chrome brass and it holds only 18grams. Overall I can't recommend this machine enough. My only other move may be to remove the finger guard to make cleaning the chute easier. Retention is not an issue though for me, I haven't flagged it as an issue in taste or pour. I would definitely grind some beans through though if left for several days although that happens rarely.
  • Has it been almost 2 years since we purchased our Robur Time has flown My Robur is still grinding perfectly and I don’t think it’s worn out yet and may be several more years before I notice any changes I do however vacuum and clean the burrs every month or so KK
  • Yep.... agreed! Mr Robur is the apple of my eye and proudly stands head and shoulders over the other gear on the bench. A great machine!

Every time I get upgradeitis...well first time in two years, it always circles back to the Robur. I can't think of any other grinder I am confident will come close. I like the looks too in spite of the size.
