  hi, well i dont know any stats, but last night i went through 4 litres of soy when usually i would only go through 250mls I dont actually mind using soy, i can get a really good texture with it. As for decaf, well normal decaf makes excellent looking flat whites for me, but weak decaf??? isnt it just murky water when its weak? Lately more so as a joke me and my coffee making friends have been ordering soya babycinos to see what sort of a reaction we would get (being two large lads it would appear strange to me :P )and to my supprise they actually taste pretty good Mimmo

  Does anyone know of any cafes that refuse to sell soy or decaf out of principle? Does anyone have any reliable information on what percentage of people order soy or decaf as opposed to normal coffee?

  Sounds like a journalist kind of question. People after statistics ::) You could look in the yellow pages for narrow minded cafes or arrogant cafes, see how you go. That is like posting on a wine forum "How many cafes/restaurants refuse to stock white wine out of principal"? Many people are lactose intolerant and or don't like all the jitters of coffee after 12pm. I hope people don't read this and think it's a good thing. Personally I think it's quite childish.

  If you read the question before you attmepted to analyse it would have understood that I was asking if there were any cafes that did not serve them, not whether it is right, proper, offensive or childish. Further, my questions were in part, based on my experience and some observations: 1. people who ask for decaf or soy account for at most 10%of coffee sales in a typical store 2. having an extra grinder for 30-40 decafs a day seems a waste of capital (particularly if you use a good one) 3. decaf drinkers don't have an allegence to any particular coffee since all forms of decafination destroy the subtlies that distinguish one blend from another. They are looking for a coffee tasting drink rather than a particular coffee. 4. soy drinkers similarly cannot taste a good coffee for obvious reasons. 5. so if you are interested in building a brand and your business based around a commitment to quality espresso can you count on the decaf or soy drinker to help you? I suspect not...

  ahem... Saucer of soy milk table five?? No need to be so catty  :-/ Im not sure of the amounts but i know there is nothing worse than a decaf weak skim latte... kinda defeats the purpose of drinking coffee.

  A few final observations: Maybe 2 out of every 3 decaf drinkers I ever served said they drank decaf because they just wanted a "weak" coffee as opposed to being allergic to caffeine (yes there is such a medical condition) or caffeine intolerant. Almost all soy drinkers are women and drink it for so called health reasons. Most people who are lactose intolerant would rather have a long black before drinking a soy flat white. Yes there are a few who actually don't mind the taste of soy but they wont be able to tell one coffee from the next.

  I say if they want it give it to them.  I am not such a coffee snob that I wont serve special anything if people want something. People's tastes are peoples tastes that is why we have diverse menus.   Ristretto  8)

  Dear denise boog. I dont know what type of industry you come from but let me tell you that in my work place a lot of work goes to produce a fresh ground cup of decaff, and to me having a second grinder to do this goes to show that the person behind the machine does not take any short cuts. Investing in a grinder for decaff was one of my main prioreties and having given customers and some of the coffee reps out there a decaff late and having them compliment the coffee after goes to show you that its not a waste of money.On the soy drinkers all i can say is that if you steam a good silky soy milk and dont over cook it then you will taste the good coffee that you  are looking for how do i know this?. I use 12 litres of soy milk a day and my customers love it.Good luck on your reaserch.
