After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

how long can you keep beans for ?? price ?

Some qusetions for all coffee lovers.?



I buy beans for about 6-8 dollars for 250 grams from my local roaster. I go to a few to try different roasts and beans.

Now I have a new grinder and machine for home I have been getting a few gifts off friends of beans.

One just gave me a KILO of beans from his local COLES supermarket.  They were quiet good, not the best but very nice.  A few weeks later I asked him how much they were.  On special for 11.98        is that amazing or not   or is this normal and I didnt know they were availablr for this price........Coles had quiet a few brands for similar prices he said...1 kilo of vittoria for 15.98,  I now currently pay 6.50 for 250 grams of vittoria from my local cafe.

Do vittoria care that the price is half at a supermarket than the local shop. isnt that cheapening the product for them ?

Anyway my roaster tells me to use the beans no longer than 4 weeks after he gives them to me.

But the beans from COLES have DECEMBER 2005 best before use.  Know I know I wont die from this but shouldnt they say best before march 2005.  I mean a lot shorter time.

I have looked up this topic on 4 different websites today and they all give different opinions. My friend originally bought the kilo beans after also getting information of a website.  I mean he got the tip to go to a supermarket to get cheap beans.

Am I being bamboozled by too much information.

I have an isomac home machine,

how much should I pay for 250 grams of roasted beans ??

How much for a kilo ??

how long can I keep them for ??

I keep getting told certain beans are inferior, ie robuster versus arabica etc etc...but shouldnt I try them all. ??

Are the COLES kilo bags really a bargain ??  1 kilo Vittoria for 15 dollars.

Any advice from fellow home users and also advice from the professional bean roaster sellers etc, and industry pros.

    Hello Watson, good question. First the business of internet sites...ther are quite a few sites "specialising" in coffee related stuff. Unfortunately a lot of participants are not in the coffee industry so it is common to see misconceptions and misunderstandings rather than facts being recommended around. Coffee is

    I concur FC very good advice from a pro, lots of crap on the net, it makes me sad to read all the experts in every industry now have some un checked forum/ And also so called pros who are 18 in shops telling everybody about roasting and blends and who work there 2 days a week between school.  I heard a boy in myers coffee machine section dishing out rubbish on how gaggia was the best machine out there etc. Dont bother looking at anything else, and keep the coffee in the fridge. Dont get me started. Does all this drive anyone else nuts out there. I too think 3 or so weeks after roasting is about right. But after grinding, yes not long at all. All my friends keep their coffee in the fridge, cant change their minds.  Dont know where it all started. But I will look in coles for a kilo of beans for 11.98, thats cheap.   I will buy some and report back. It does show the buying power also though of the supermarkets though doesnt it. Look forward to more advice from real pros. Keep up the good work on this site. Java Man

    Java Be carful with the 11.98 beans. They will more than likey give you a bit of a kick by the 2nd or 3rd espresso. Possibly have a little extra robusta in them. What FC said is correct. Tooooooo many experts dishing out unqualified garbage. We need more Fresh Coffee (in both meanings of the word) JD

    thought i would add in here while i was on this website interesting subject my local coles woolworths safeway    etc have all expanded their bean range one is always on special i too have tried vittoria for 13-14  kilo,,,,,,,,,,not sure exactly it was a while a go it is cheap                 the vittoria ones were okay......verging on good but thats at home on a pro machine still not as sweet as fresh roasted. but being coffee nerds we are in the minority supermarkets sell tons of pre ground packets off coffee that have been on the shelfs...wharehouses for months and no one seems to compain.. i think we know too much as most people want cheap product and wont pay 5-9 dollars for 250 grams and I also understand that. i am sure vittoria would not let their brand be ruined as would the others i see....Harris etc just sit on the shelfs and give them a bad name. each too his own but i will try the harris next time for curiosity i guess if you have a family kids, bills....beans are a luxury/...?? the vittoria had a photo on the back of a sydney restarant and owner  endorsing the brand saying his patrons drank it so there are a few reputations at stake.  cant remember his name....look next time you go to the supermarket... marc

    Actually, you'll probably find they were the Neil Perry beans roasted by Vittoria (what a celebrity chef has to do with coffee, I'm not quite sure)
    Couldn't stop myself posting this - someone gave me a pack of the new Neil Perry 'Rockpool' coffee beans roasted by Vittoria ; they were in a vacuum pack but I couldn't help but notice the use-by date was May 2004. Now that's making a freshness statement! -L
