After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Am I in the right place?

edited January 1970 in Have your say
Evening all,
Have registered, logged on and had a look around.
Correct me if I am wrong but seems to me majority of posts are from people involved in the retail coffee industry, I'm a simple consumer and wannabe home barista.
Is this the place for me?

Cheers,

Dry Bean. :)

  • Hi DB - firstly welcome to the forum, and yes, you are in the right place. The only Board where the emphasis is more towards the retail industry is the industry-oriented 'Trade page' board; otherwise in fact, we very much welcome home espresso enthusiasts! A
  • Thanks Admin, I'm about 55 years into my quest and the perfect cup still eludes me. I can well remember my first Capuccino, bought for me by a friend in a long defunct coffee lounge in Adelaide (circa 1956) named (The Festive bowl), I was a pimply faced kid and the die was cast. 55 years later and I'm still searching, the early days of my search involved all manner of devices and pots, peculators, stove top espresso pots, Turkish coffee pots, lots of instant and of course the constant was Espresso at one of our favourite Pizza establishments, Adelaide was and still is well catered for by the Italian community in the form of restaurants, coffee bars and pizza bars. About 11 years ago my wife bought me a Krupps espresso machine which was fed a diet of supermarket ground coffee, it lasted about 12 months during this time I discovered there was more to this coffee game than what I was experiencing, so sold the Krupps and bought a Silvia Rocky combo and a whole new world opened up, the Rancilio combination lasted almost 10 trouble free years. Toward the end of Nov 2009 the upgrade bug hit and with the support of SWMBO I did a heap of research and finally bought a Bezzra Galatea Domus, is it better than Silvia? on its day head and shoulders above, but, (some times) when the stars are not aligned I wish I had Silvia sitting on the bench, I knew her well, she was easy going consistent and reliable, the Bezzera is a sports model, good looker, great performer when driven well, not forgiving of mistakes and a little idiosyncratic, am I pleased with it? you bet. Oh and for a grinder, Rocky is still doing a great job. Cheers, Dry Bean. :)
  • Hey DB, welcome to the forum! I had a Domus but swapped it for something more industrial as I was doing a lot of catering - but I loved that machine! The thing I found was that they are really finicky when it comes to dose and grind and that they absolutely devour fresh beans but practically spit anything else out - if nothing else it induced me to roast my own so that I always had fresh stock on hand Also was massively impressed with the manual preinfusion: flicking the lever to the half way mark and holding it there for up to 20sec before flicking it to full to extract the shot - massive yummy caramalised sugar flavours! Let us know specifically if there is anything troubling you with this machine - and we should be able to help you out! Cheers, ACg

Thanks ACg, (Also was massively impressed with the manual preinfusion: flicking the lever to the half way mark and holding it there for up to 20sec before flicking it to full to extract the shot) I didn't know about this, never seen it mentioned before, will certainly give it a try. • Hi and welcome I have had my Galatea for almost 2 years I was pulling great shots from day one The only thing I upgraded was the grinder I now have a Mazzer Major paired with the Galatea I agree with Pat (Acg) - fresh beans and dosing levels are very crucial I practically wrote the book on it Also like pat I roast my own beans Had to invent a coffee roaster to fuel my wonderful addiction

  • I upgraded from a Macap M4D to the Mazzer Major Forget about weighing the beans Just make sure you tamp 8mm deep into your basket This depth will just clear the water screen by a hairs whisker Also the Galatea prefers a fine grind because the OPV is factory set at 12 Bar This is good for my Ristretos

I'm interested in the manual pre-infusion you mention, I move the lever to the halfway point and nothing happens, no pump, no apparent water flow, nothing. Can you provide a little more info? Thanks. :)
  • From memory the preinfusion flow rate is about a drop per second: try ut without the handle in the machine to see what happens so what you get is a slow caramalisation of the sugars in the coffee - you should be able to notice the difference in shot quality even if you can't observe anything Cheers ACg

Hmmmm, something must have changed re spec's, tried as you suggest, no porta-filter in place, move handle to detante position, nothing, not a single drop :-?

Just looked through the Galatea manual, no mention of manual pre infusion there.

My Galatea does pre infuse but the lever needs to be nudged up a little past centre However because I have a Vibe pump/tank version - it tends to drain the HX water line This in turn  forces the vibe pump to re prime for a couple of seconds before pressure is adequate enough to force the brew water past the puck when the lever is in the full on position I think it would be a different story on the plumbed in version ??
