After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Low Acid Coffee

edited January 1970 in Have your say
Given I am a lover of good coffee and have recently been diagnosed with Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) I am on the hunt for a good LOW ACID coffee in Australia. Can anybody suggest a brand that is readily available in Australia. I live in Perth. WA.

  • HI TBro - I would say that the way to go is the beans themselves, which are available from a variety of suppliers, and many boutique roasters, of course I would recommend beans such as the PNG Okapa, also known as Purosa, which are high altitude and shade grown Jasper Coffee stock's the Okapa, as does my roaster, Joshua Bailey, here in Melbourne Where are you based? Your local roaster ought to be able to point you in the right direction Regards, Acg
  • I'd be more inclined toward the "Eureka Coffee" range. Australian grown and bla. http://www.eurekacoffee.com.au/ My experience with thier coffee is that it tends to be low acid. I agree with pat on the Okapa, but it is really just uninteresting as far as palate goes. As far as the reality of coffee and acid is concerned. Don't seek a low acid coffee per se. Use alkaline water (Ph 6 - 7/8 is human safe) in your extraction process. And only drink that water as your regular H2O intake. http://www.alkaway.com.au/products-alphion.html. Hope that helps
  • Thanks for the above flushed - good sound advice! However I recommend that you swing by Foxy and try the Okapa as a SO and you may be surprised! Cheers, ACg
  • If you need a low acid coffee try any bean through a ice dripper.  Not sure of any in WA, though maybe askk Spring espresso in Subiaco.  Using very low brewing temps it  leaves the bulk of the acid in the beans and away from your brew.
  • Though I agree with your extraction temp/acidity staement P. It really does make the espresso taste pretty incipid. But if acidity is your priority then it is a reasonable suggestion (if your using a commercial machine). Though I still dont like Okapa Pat. Just a personal taste thing I guess.
  • That's coz you haven't tasted mine, bro -  roasted by a different roaster on different roasting equipment to a different roast profile ! Take the Okapa challenge and I'll make a convert of you guaranteed! But you better be quick coz we're dropping the product shortly as the new harvest has a few grading problems ...
