After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Is coffee the new wine?

edited January 1970 in Have your say
Interesting article from SMH: http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/restaurants-and-bars/is-coffee-the-new-wine-20101115-17u1l.html

interestingly enough, it appeared in the 'Your Sydney' section of the SMH website, even though all the references are to Melbourne cafes!!

  • Hey All - I've been to a number of these wine and coffee diners, and I have to say that I'm not convinced... OK - I've had a couple of WOW moments - but they were few and far between - and mostly my experiences have been under-whelming Sure coffee has a billion flavonoids, but most selecting, roasting and presentation of coffee as we know it does not do justice to the complexity of the beverage, partly because we are still very new to these forms of technology, but more so perhaps because the level of skill and attention to detail required to carry off a successful coffee degustation dinner is I believe lacking - no doubt much for the same reasons - as this aspect of the industry is still in its infancy Still, I expect to see much better results as time goes by, and I for one would welcome the opportunity to lend my palate to the tasting experience, and to help come up with some winning flavour combinations! Cheers, ACG
  • actually, in spite of what I said on DB's 'new religion' thread, I do think you can take coffee only so far, and i must say I'm wondering if this is one step too far...

Nah - I just think that this aspect of industry is still fresh as a daisy and will only contimue to grow and prosper as time goes on, much like the whole 'fourth wave' coffee movement itself... ACg

What a load of bollocks, these guys are seeing things as they would like them to be and not as they really are. (kangaroo with coffee and chocolate crumble is proving popular with diners.) Geez that sounds appetising, well perhaps if you have the palate of an 8 year old or my dog, she eats mixtures like that at any time of the day without complaint. (three-course vegetarian breakfasts with choice of siphoned or pour-over single-origin coffees) Closer to the mark, however pretty bloody pretentious, of course coffee goes well with breakfast, always has, for most of us coffee would not be a replacement for wine at this time of day, unless of course you sleep rough and wash down your burger scavenged from a rubbish bin with a swig or two of port. (coffee cognoscenti) Read pretentious snobs. (We have been teaming coffee with food for decades
  • It's interesting how these type of articles are rehashed over and over and inevitably there's a corresponding article about the 'pioneers' of Melbourne espresso coffee - almost certainly designed to set up an us and them / new and old dynamic - which agreed smacks of lazy journalism Give me a coffee and cigar matching workshop any day - now there's a winning flavour combination that I could sink my teeth into! • yep, have to say I'm with you on this one DB  8)
