Hi guys - have a couple of great prizes to give away - 2x dvd's of Black Coffee, a very interesting and well-researched [& not always flattering] doco on some of the countries of origin... have two to give away;  we're just considering a few options for a competition - probably not roasting-related however... probably one dvd per week for two consecutive weeks.

in the meantime, any ideas please feel free to list below!

great, thanks guys and thanks Jeff for your kind offer for weeks 3 & 4 OK so let's make Week 1 as follows: Best shot of a short black, as judged by mod team and myself. I guess it's worth noting that we're looking more at the artistic merit of the pic, rather than the quality of the actual espresso [although a nice shot of espresso will make a better shot, if you know what I mean]... A couple of tips:

[li]you can either make it a shot pouring or just the shot in the cup[/li] [li]one thing I've learnt from experience is that flash never works - if you've got a point-and-shoot camera, that will be fine, but make sure you turn the auto-flash off![/li]

We'll load all shots into the gallery as well, which means everyone gets to see your work. Closing time midnight Friday [this Friday 10/9]. Email jpgs [pref between around 300Kb - 1Mb] to [email protected] with Forum comp in Subject line... Happy shooting!! A

Just another idea for the judging side of things. Could it be set up as a poll and everyone gets to vote.  No names on the photos so there can be no 'name' judging??? Oh a bit more, since there are 2 prizes, each for 2 weeks, that if you win the first week you can't win the second week but can still put your photo up???  If you understand what I mean.  Everyone can enter for both prizes though. That way everyone gets to contribute including mods, who I feel shouldn't be left out.

Wow Jeff... that is a fantastic prize! Thank you for your generosity also.  I love Nicole's idea ofba pollmbecause it allows some of our talented Mods to get clickin'.  Sorry Richard but I think the more the merrier.

You're probably right - I guess I'll lose then :'( I'll take a photo and do my best, but only once I get my new tamper base tomorrow (did I mention I was excited ).

great idea S_S - just need to check if our poll capacity is up to it [as it's fairly basic] - eg is there a max number of entries that it would limit us to, etc?? Once I've found this out from my IT guys in the am will advise; by the way, since we're starting a day into the week [ie a day late] will extend deadline till midnight Sat... anyway will confirm judging process tomorrow am, but agree mods should be free to enter. A PS agree that it would be good to run into a second week, but am thinking of having a different photographic subject for Week 2; again will advise shortly

Ok seems to be no reason why it shouldn't work... so here's the 'ducks' guts' as Attilio would say: Members send pics in by email and we will load pics anonymously on the forum [will create a new gallery specially for comp]. Each pic will be given a letter and we will simultaneously create a poll where people can vote - ie tick A, B, C, D ... etc depending on the number of entries. One last thing: so as to give people plenty of time, have decided to extend original Short Black comp by a week - Friday 16th Sept [ie a total of 10 days from now]. We will then have two prizes - a member choice [as voted by the poll] and an Admin's choice, as voted by me - each will get a copy of the DVD!! so, get shooting!! A

Ok guys - we had a small 'vulnerability' in the Gallery section of the site [which is where I was going to put up the pics] and Muscles very kindly offered to fix it over the weekend... Unfortunately, it turned out to be a little more involved than we thought and in fact the best solution turned out to be to restore to Friday's version of the whole site, which meant losing a few posts - it was actually pretty quiet over weekend, but apologies if yours was one of the posts missing.... if you remember roughly what it was, feel free to knock it back up [in more or less the same words] today! From my point-of-view [ie as Admin] there wasn't too much, except for me hassling everybody on this thread to get their pics in, and from memory there were responses from several members [Shape_shifter, Richard and Lacehim] saying they were onto it - can't wait to see your pics!! A
