After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

Im pretty keen on a 3kg version for my next incarnation now the question becomes electric or gas?  I hear that compliance is much less of an issue with electric? P
I am not sure what kind of compliance is required...it would not be AGA would it?  Then the question becomes is it still that much cheaper with all the extra work and compliance you need compared to getting a branded local roaster? You'll have to do your own homework there as I have no idea.  For me the whole project was worthwhile as I got the electric and it seems capable enough for now.
  • true that I'm still a wee ways off from taking that next step but I'm doing my research now!
  • Hi Kevin, Hope you're still reading this thread, I wonder if your issue of low ROR reading is due to your thermocouple probe is not in the body of the bean?  I just purchased an M5 1cm thermocouple probe that fits perfectly into the nut hole at the viewer and depending on which side I put the probe on gives me very different readings. First I put it right of the viewer and reading was very low...at 670g of beans it was only just catching some beans and the ROR was unstable and very low.  Then I put it left of center and it was very stable and gave a reading of between around 14 deg/min and then gradually at the end closer to 5 deg/min nearing 2nd crack...but I was also lowering the temperature and playing with fan. Incidentally I still found I had to alter the CS datalogger preference and put in a factor of about 50 deg...as it read 1st crack happening at 135 deg... I attach some photos.  You can see how left of center the probe is right in the beans while at the right of center it is missing it.
  • Hi Saoye, I have the same issue, I was wondering if a thermocouple I use that I am unsure of the type was causing the offset but I have been told there will be a difference in temp between the inbuilt thermocouple and the position you have the BT in (left side in bean mass). I have an offset of about 50C at FC which seems incredible. I will be ordering 2 type K this week so at least I will have a known start point, with both being the same and then will move the BT probe around if reqd.

Thanks Dillon, I've been watching this thread closely and appreciate any info. I thought the ideal position would be the left side view glass hole as I'm sure Chris fitted his there. BTW, where did you purchase your M5 thermocouple probe from? Online? Cheers.

Hi Kevin, yes definitely left side of the sight glass. I bought it from ebay...it's EGT K Type Thermocouple for Exhaust Gas Temperature Probe with M5 Thread. give that a google...and I bought the 10mm probe length with 2m cable length.  Hongkong seller.  screwing it in was the tricky bit trying not to twist the coil.  Here's the profile reading with the new probe.

I have found the PID keeps the increase at 10 deg C. Kevin, what have you got the SV temperature set at?  I have put mine at 300 degrees to keep the rate of increase up there, and I was wondering if yours is lower.  I think default was set at 210 degrees C.  As it gets closer to the SV temperature the rate will slow and then maintain.  This is the PID working.  I have been trying to get into the Menu to set the "Proportional" value to try to increase the rate but have not been successful in finding it in the Fotek M21 (this is the PID that comes with the machine) menu.  With the PID rate rise set at 10 degrees, charge temp becomes critical since there is no way to increase this rate on the elements alone.  You will need to use strategic air flow changes to give the temperature a jump during stages if you are aiming for a specific end roast time.
I have just had a "play" with the CCR's settings and as advised, reset the SV from 230 back to 300 as it was when delivered. Don't know if you have got into the "P" and "I" settings yet, but; I found the "Proportional" value by pressing and holding the Shift and Function key (2nd from left) for 3 secs, then the "Set" key twice brought up the "P" setting. Mine is set at 36 but on the instruction sheet, the default(?) shows 25. Pressing "Set" again gets "I" (Integral Time) with mine set at 80 and the instruction manual shows 150. Keep pressing "Set" to get out of the menu. What's your view on these settings (36 & 80) and what is yours set at? Cheers.  :coffee2:

Hi Kevin, no I can't get P and I...I wonder if mine has be locked out by a setting.  Sorry to be a pain but are you able to cycle through all your individual settings and note them down for me?  I'll go into mine and load those settings in and maybe it will allow me to access the P and I.  If you could do this the next time you access your roaster I would be eternally grateful!
  • Hi Guys. Any chance one of you guys could shoot me a message with a rough price you paid to self import after taxes etc. I'm in Sydney (camden) and am interested. Weighing up self importing v buying from ebay here in Sydney. Cheers Ps is anyone close to Sydney and feels like showing off their ccr, would love a demo :) will supply the green beans and beer to cover time!
  • Hi Lukemc, How did you go? I noticed there has been a lot of changes to this roaster so one has to be vigilant on what the supplier provides by asking the right questions and comparing with others who already own one.  Changes could also be as drastic as the size of the drum supplied. Anyway, I have made several new videos of last night's roast.  Here I am trying for a more linear curve with a more constant rate of rise.  Pushing the roaster with a 1.25kg roast.  I kept the heat on full all the way in this roast without adjusting except at the end I did turn off the heat in the last 1 minute to coast into 2nd crack.  Hope it helps. • Hi Mae Vids look good, it's such a quiet roaster considering it's size I am waiting until January when Juan gets his first two roasters in, I will go and have a look at them. He believes they will have FOTEK Pid and timer and should be able to roast 1.2kg green, so hopefully they are specced the same as yours.

  • A quick question to fellow CCR owners. Does anyone perform a dry roast (bean-less) as a cleaning process? I have now done 50+ roasts and noticed the sight glass is beginning to get that coffee oil colour on it. Easy process to clean the glass but as for the drum and interior....? I am prepared to do an extensive pull down/overhaul soon as the roaster is almost a year old. But wonder if there is a cleaning recommendation for this roaster as I don't recall reading anything about it in the limited documentation that was available when purchased.
  • You could crank it up to 350 centigrade or so for about 30 minutes with zero airflow. That's how self cleaning ovens work anyway
  • Placed an order through the Aussie distributor today for my black on black (hopefully) roaster. 6 weeks for delivery. Time has slowed down already!!
  • Hi Guys, where do i find distributor contact details for this roaster Cheers James
  • I found mine by googling north coffee 1kg roaster. But it's rentaroaster in rude Sydney. His name is Juan
  • Thanks luke, is the north the same as the ccr?
  • I think so but maybe someone with more of an idea can answer that one.
  • CCR was the name given to the roaster in this forum as previously there was no known branding.  It's also known as JYR and a few other names.  All slight variations of the same roaster.  I know JYR is affiliated with North coffee.
  • ahhh, that makes sense, cheers
