After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

" HG-One" New manual titan grinder!

edited January 1970 in Grinders
The OE Pharos has been the first and only manual grinder with a full size commercial conical burr set - until now! The new player on the block is the HG-One. Its a different approach to the idea, its in no way a 'hand' grinder, its a bench grinder thats manually operated. Think a Versalab with no motor.

There is a thread over at Home Barista with plenty of discussion,

  • Looks interesting, but extremely expensive for a hand-cranked model.
  • Technically great and all that but misses the portability/space part of the hand grinder equation TOTALLY. The thing has the same footprint as my K10!

If they made this in "kit form" they could ship around the world, and have "optional motor" instead of handle. Would bring the cost down heaps, and make it more attractive to a lot of people I believe.
  • I had a similar idea a long time ago However in my minds eye I used a drill press Then I saw the Versalab and did not pursue it any further KK
  • That is a really interesting grinder ...but it really isn't a hand grinder in the traditional sense...
  • The HG-One online store goes live tonite our time, I will be ordering one, I will use it with my ES-2 when it arrives!
  • This grinder seems quite interesting with its excellent features...though its somewhat expensive..but its amazing! Worth getting!
  • I will do a review when it arrives, I think early next year is the plan.

    Wot's an ES-2 then?

Looks interesting - like that $10000 one but a lot less complicated (and presumably cheaper!)
  • But it's not portable, like the Pharos which is portable.... The 83mm, or is it 81mm, burr set with a motor gear drive would be very hot!  I have a Versalab M3 and really do like it but with the larger burrs it might be better than the VL, maybe.  The VL with it's mixed burr set is pretty amazing.

    So, did you order one?

No, I need to sell some other goodies, like maybe my GS/3.

I mean did you order one?
  • that's a great looking grinder - I can see a 'alternate brew methods only' cafe opening up with only these grinders in use to 'keep the integrity of the beans intact' in fact I could see myself in such a setup! ACg

I like this! a lot. blackcoffeeshop.com.au is doing this... possibly the first/only black-only coffee shop in AU. pop-up, random locations, fun
  • I've used Moccona. I have a plunger but in the last I discovered the coffee to be poor when I used it. I've been informed if I put a bit of attempt into it I can put a reasonable coffee with it and the starting point is with a coffee grinding machine. What do people suggest?
  • Something like the Lido from Orphan Espresso would do the job nicely. I use one with a Clever Coffee Dripper at work. Would also be a good espresso grinder if you decide to upgrade from a plunger down the track.
  • Mine has arrived! Set it up in 5 minutes, dialled it in as suggested (1.25 turns off touching burrs), then decided to make it a bit finer for the levers, ground a shot and pulled it on the Izzo - perfect 25sec pour! Its just superbly engineered, feels incredibly solid and smooth, looks gorgeous!

  • It looks amazing mate!  How many turns of the handle for a double shot?

I was wondering that as well and visited the web site Found lots of info and the video of the grind - http://hg-one.com/portfolio-items/17g-dose-grind/ Looks like a beautiful grind I should also ask a question - what size burrs is your grinder Gulumay, 71mm or 83mm KK
  • Looks to me like an elegantly designed and beautifully manufactured grinder. I am keen to hear how practical it is on a day-to-day basis. My prediction is that it will be a joy to use.....(jealous) Are there any static issues with the grounds?
  • Paulo, I have literally only gorund the one dose through it, so too early to comment on static.
  • I would be very interested as to how the taste compares to the Pharos now that you have both, you can clearly make the call.
  • Mine arrived last week too - I went for 71mm. I agree with galumay - very solidly made, weighs a ton. I have had massive static issues though - at least half the dosed coffee stays in the funnel and below the burrs. the 'blind tumbler' is a saviour though (that's the cup thingy at below the funnel in galumay's photo).  It catches the grinds that do come out of the funnel easily, and then I take off the funnel, hold it over the tumbler and whack the grounds down out of it. you can then put the tumbler directly onto your basket (it has rings on the bottom which fit a Cremina basket and 58mm basket) and then lift out the centre plug and tap the grinds down.  All this settles the grinds nicely for tamping. I took a bit longer to get it dialled in, but am now very happy with it.  The coffee since has definitely been different compared to my Macap M4D, somehow a cleaner taste. The major attraction for me was the low grinds retention.  I think maybe half a gram is left under the burrs after my whacking routine and the machine is easy to clean. I'd be interested to hear once galumay has been using it for longer about static with the 83mm burrs. Sniff
  • Apparently one or two drops (literally) of water in with the beans prevents this.

Also stales them a lot faster...
  • Immediately pre-grind, not in the bag!
