After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

  • I have moved the HG-One into the production zone, early testing suggests it will be our weapon of choice! I may end up selling the Wega as I now have 2 high end electric conical grinders I am not using!!

  • My heart just skipped a beat at your photo!  Very nice!  PM me a price with shipping to Brisbane for the Wega... I might just add it to my bill from ya!  I alo might stop pending money... New chef's knife, D800...  ???
  • Reiss (of Londinium Espresso) has a post up about a mod he's made to the HG-One, returning it to the original concept: http://londiniumespresso.com/blogs/londinium-espresso-blog/7236520-hgone-back-to-its-best-i-e-how-it-was-before-the-focus-group-improved-it Galumay, it might be interesting for you to give this a try.
  • I saw that, once again his choice of words reflects poorly on him. It was noted in other places! I cant see the point in the modification, the handle was made slightly longer for good reason, it looks better now IMO as well. I think that making it more difficult to turn - the effect of his mod. - would be a negative particularly for my wife.
  • forgive my ignorance, but what is the beaut big red lever in the photo?  and is that a pid on it? C-

  • Izzo Pompeii? Stunning machine!
  • Just a little update on how my grinder is going. I found the static issue has reduced dramatically with my latest roast batch, which was much darker than the first roast I put through, which had barely finished first crack when I pulled it from the roaster.  This roast was pulled at the first few snaps of second crack. Now after grinding the amount of grinds in the lower funnel is minimal, and easily slides into the blind tumbler with a few taps.  There's also minimal grinds left on the burrs. Even in milk I can taste the improvement in the shots, there's no hint at all of bitterness, which I think can be attributed to the minimal grind retention. There's been much debate on HB about settling the grinds into the basket, WDT and all that.  I'm just tapping them through the blind tumbler, knocking the side of the basket with my hand, and roughly levelling.  I'm not getting perfect pours, but they're getting better. In short, I'm very happy with the grinder.  Proof: I have sold my faithful Macap M4D. Sniff

I'm glad to see that mine is not the only kitchen with a substantial amount of hardware in it! :)
  • You should show us!
  • Galumay: Do you find the grind/shot quality of the HG one considerably better then the Pharos?
  • No mate, I cant tell the difference in the cup, the advantage of the HG-One is that my wife can use it. She never took to the Pharos as it was a bit hard for her to use. I think because the HG-One sits beside the Izzo and is easy to use she fell in love with it straight away - the design/aesthetics help too! For mine the Pharos and HG-One are in a class of their own, there is no other manual grinders with this size commercial burrs in them and the consistency of grind and forgiving nature of big conical burrs mean very little adjustment is required.
  • What's retention of grinds like? Edit:  They also need to work on their postage costs.  $215.60 to post a grinder to Australia!  If memory serves me correct the L1 doesn't even cost that to ship from the UK to Australia!

Let me know if you ever decide to sell the Pharos

I read on another site that it was later revised down to about $90. I can't speak from experience as they have don't have any to sell me.

I was told the $90 shipping was a mistake, that guy already paid for his invoice so he was lucky. They only offer one shipping method to streamline it, I think it's an express service. I have no hesitation paying the $215 shipping when they are available again which I've been told they should receive the new shipment in late May / early June. Good things come to those that wait  ;D
  • That's a shame. There is a big difference between $90 and $215. We don't have much choice living here but I would rather see that money going to the manufacturer then the courier.
  • I just punched the dimensions and weight into my Californian freight forwarders calculator and they quoted $122 US ($118 AUD) for freight insured. DHL who I think is HG's courier quoted $151 USD. I suspect a freight forwarder gets a better rate but I will email HG requesting that they speak with the couriers.
  • Let us know how that works out, quite interested in the response.
  • HTB, no retention of grinds at all, freight was $220.50 USD when i bought mine.
  • Did you end up paying a heap of tax/duty when you imported it?
  • No, the whole package was well under $1000 AUD. So no GST.

Michael, That grinder looks like it's got your name on it! would be just the match for your big lever.....

I received a reply. HG are in regular contact with their courier but are unable to get the same discount as they don't have the enough volume. They will speak with the courier again before the next shipment. It will cost around $25 to have it shipped to my freight forwarder. So I might consider that when the time comes.
  • Anyone with any new updates on this grinder? I am seriously thinking of ordering one.
  • the postage is super expensive, but very fast, UPS came in only 4 days makes local postage look sick.
