After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

'Beware the withdrawals...

edited October 2012 in Off-topic
As some may know I was quite unwell last week. What started out as a headcold with minor headaches and nausea quickly escalated into something that had my head feeling like wild horses were dragging ploughs through every inch of my brain.

It was pain like none I've ever experienced in a headache - not just one point and one type of pain, but multiple points of different pain types, the whole gamut of headache varieties.

I'd been unable to keep even water down the first day and just assumed that the headaches of the second day were part of the illness....

But I wonder. On day three I still wasn't able to eat, but I was able to drink coffee. I woke with a headache, had a coffee and shortly thereafter my headache dissipated and didn't return.

So I now think that the majority of pain from day 2 came not from the cold but the withdrawal symptoms!

Beware withdrawal  - perhaps it's best to maintain your coffee consumption when sick, if the lack of it is worse than having it!

  • On Doctors advise I was told not to drink coffee after my operation But I lasted approximately 6 weeks Then went on the search for a great decaf bean and when I found it I was drinking decaf for about six months before I started on the regular beans I had some headaches from stopping coffee cold turkey, maybe not as bad as your description but bad enough Lucky I had some of those extreme pain tablets to use and that did the trick KK
  • I've generally tried to avoid major addictions since my early 20's when I was averaging 3 litres of coca cola a day. The withdrawals from stopping that cold-turkey were equally extreme and convinced me that addiction is something I need to not be involved with. I'll make an exception for coffee tho. ;)
  • in bali I came down with a dreaded dose of Bali Belly it wasnt totally debilitating but it was persistent and after a week I went to the doc and got some medicine which helped straight away I wasnt able to drink coffee for about four days and in fact the doc said 'No coffee!' which I took with a pinch of salt and a double espresso and I didnt feel too great at all - most likely from the caffeine withdrawal but as sooan as I could I was back on the juice and feeling much better Dr Pat recommends 2 x mugs of medium grind coffee (about 40g in each) topped with hot water and sipped leisurely for best results :) p
  • When on my honeymoon, I had no means of making coffee. After day three, I felt like I wanted to die (nothing to do with the marriage, I promise!). Flu like symptoms, headache like never before, breaking out in sweats. Wife worked out what the problem was, and force fed me some horrible triple shot espresso from an italian pizza place. 10 minutes later, I was perfectly ok. Caffeine - it's a drug that hurts noone...unless you run out!
