After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

After my halogen TO died, Lacehim lent me his old Tiffany non-halogen TO but it also doesn't generate enough heat - Takes over 21 mins to get to second crack, if it makes it at all! Are those $39 KMart brand jobbies halogen? For some reason I thought they weren't.
My Tiffany TO was superb however when the fan failed after many hundreds of roasts I got a highlander brand TO with halogen element Keep the old unit and convert it to a heat gun application - see thread I started I will do this myself with the old Tiffany KK
Kelsey, the new one I have is from HomeArt. The Tiffany was fine with the guard removed, but I like the light of the new one and it seems to have a bit more heat.

Hi mate, my 39 Kmart was Halogen and gutless. This Aldi one has more headroom but heats more slowly initially... Thus the thaw setting for 5minutes.
I think mine is heading south. Took 19 minutes to roast to 1st crack today, and that was with a 10 min 250deg pre-heat! Time for a trip to HomeArt me thinks.
Yep... Both my halogen roasters still work fine albeit much longer roast times. I wonder if there's a way to re-invigorate fatiguing elements... It seems such a waste (throw-away society)!
I will probably freecycle mine. IT would still be fine for cooking. We are using at the extreme end of it's temperature limit, but baking a cake or cooking a roast would probably put less stress on the element.
[li] Bi-metal strip temp control has a LARGE tolerance. The sensor face can get dirty. The element connectors can fail, and if doing back to back with long runs; then this will add to early retirement. Internals can get dirty / oily and also interfere with temp control.[/li]
Clean and blow out with compressed air... Until I had my own compressor; the local servo was a regular pit stop...
My Kogan Turbo oven is more than 6 months old and today I asked it to do a kilogram roast in the KKTO. Five minutes of stabilisation at 50degC then rolling second crack 15 minutes later. This is the best turbo oven I've had yet and they're cheap as chips especially if you grab one when free shipping comes up! The beans were Brazilian Natural Processed and it's a very even looking roast!
Disaster??During a roast on my KKHG the agitator begun to seize and eventually stopped.Thankfully the batch had completed. Pulled apart and found the drive shaft has never been fully inserted into motor.Pulled same apart and and with tools repaired damaged drive.Gave KK a call re new motor and after a catchup he offered some parts for pickup to facilitate my refurb.This done by Grandson and a trip to Jaycar plus spade terminals and tool from son i now am back roasting.Many thanks to Paul (KK) and my family.

While waiting to complete my new fluid bed roaster I have been tempted to push the KKTO a bit harder to see what it can really do. My demand is such that I really need extra roasting capacity now! I have pushed it up to 1.2KG greens to give me 1kg roasted! Mine is modified with the thermostat bypassed and just the heater switched thru the handle and perforated plate on heater removed. To my surprise it handles it with ease, roast length is obviously a bit drawn out, but it only needs a burp to get over first crack and then a few burps thru the time between 1st and 2nd crack to maintain the RoR i want. I am getting a lovely decreasing RoR thru the whole roast and getting around 25% development time as per Rao. Beans are actually more evenly roasted thru the whole bean as a result and the taste in the cup direct from the roaster was amazing! I think mentally I always held back from pushing bigger loads because I was concerned about the roast time being too long, having broken that barrier was an interesting epiphany! Its amazing to think what this marvellous invention from Paul is capable of, a 1.2kg roaster that cost under $800! The new fluid bed, Rocquette Roaster has a lot to live up to, but if it can match the KKTO for roast quality and punch out 2.5kg roasts then it will be a success.
I'm getting 16 minute 1kg roasts (excluding 5 minute stabilisation on Thaw setting). This is because of the Kogan Turbo Oven which seems to have more juice than any of the others I've owned. I'm having issues with 500g and below roasts being a bit uneven because I've not yet leaned the new TO.
I'm finding that for larger roasts it's best to remove or take away by cutting most of the steel of the deflector plate in front of the element Normally I don't advocate the full removal for element safety reasons However the practical reason for this is mod is that the TO will not cycle ON & OFF as often and mainly stays ON I believe that the fan deflects hot air upwards from the deflector plate and activates the thermostat more frequently When there is no deflection this ON / OFF cycle in minimised KK
I do 1.2kg batches on mine, but it was only possible with the removal of the shield as KK describes - and also bypassing the heat switching. I had an electrician mate wire mine so the handle microswitch turns the heat on and off while leaving the fan running. (to turn the fan off i have to switch the TO off.) Its a bit Heath Robinson, but getting 1kg of roasted beans per batch makes it worthwhile.
As galumay has noted that he roasts 1.2 kg on the KKTO I have also done this as well with good results However I use a standard TO so I do a stabilising pre roast to help the roast reach good crack times I really should see if I can enlarge the design to be able to roast 3 or 5 kg Getting the right amount of heat is key Fear not KKTO fans - I have been thinking of another hybrid heat supply design using gas flame and forced air symilar to fluid bed designs for 3 to 5 KG roasts All these design juices were flowing when Galumay and I were discussing fluid bed roasters the other day KK
