Brett. How's the sharpness of the d800 vs the d750 as the d750 doesn't have an AA filter whereas the d800 does but it gets cancelled out with another filter.

Great post FC! Agree completely with all your facts and figures. I can't understand why folk spend the bigger bucks on the Sigma and Leica options when the result is far less different than the dollars spent. Your thesis for the 1.4 FC echoes my own in every way including where to buy. My favourite camera store photoContinental has just closed its doors for the last time

The 800 is cleaner in every regard except at ISOs above 6400 and shots required at speed. It's video is only SD if captured to internal card. In short the 800 is a better camera in almost every regard except for that which it nowadays used. I'm going to sell it for sub $2K and see how long I can wait for the 810s or more likely grab another 750. My NAS is bursting at the seams but I do miss its crop potential.

Should mention, wife uses the 800 in the studio so it's not gone.... I miss I because I bought myself a 750. I love the 750 but push comes to shove I may love an 810 better!

Ordinarily I wouldn't be in the office, however occasionally certain sacrifices need to be made Leaving for HOST exhibition the day after tomorrow, and I need to get all my sheet together before exiting stage right...so putting in some time. When I leave, the slate will be clean. Re lens (now I am having a break before switching off and going home): Canon offers 3 x 50 mm lenses The f1.2 costing I think somewhere around 2 g's local pricing The f1.4 USM costing around $465.00 local, and The f1.8 STM (latest new arrival) costing around $165.00 local, and the f1.8 II (just superseded and there is still some stock) costing $145 local. All can be had for considerably (% wise) less if prepared to buy imports etc. but in real money, saving say $20.00 to $30.00 to make say a $150.00 purchase is silly...especially as you then have to wait for delivery, when you can walk into a shop and buy over the counter and have it now. Depends on individual priorities, and of course there is more difference dollar wise on the more expensive lenses than there is on the f1.8. The f1.8 is the steal of the bunch because the diff between the resulting images from it vs the f1.4 is not so great as the difference in the price. BUT....the build quality of the f1.8 is commensurate with its great (low) price and it is said that one inadvertent, light bump can result in a lens in pieces. So I have bought the f1.4 because I want a lens that is still in one piece when I travel and take it out of the bag. After all that, the difference in all the lenses as well as any differences between the canon and nikon equivalents (which are rated better in all the internet reviews) can be filed in the waste paper bin because it will all depend on the operator and what he she is doing, his/her capability, and the subjects, to get real life photographic results. I am sure you (GK & Brett) can get far better results out of my canon gear than I can ;D, meaning just like with coffee machines, there is a lot of value in the operator and to quote Brett from another thread, just cause you own a stradivarius doesn't make you a musician ! Actually, I should say that when I was in Mexico City in May I went to the Arts Centre and there happened to be a photographic exhibition on. Unfortunately I cant remember the fellows name but he was a street photographer active from before WW2 to maybe the 1970's and he toted a simple old 45 mm fixed lens 35 mm whatever camera around and took the most unbelievable photos I have ever seen. Especially the ones during the war and the various revolutions that took place in various countries. Fantastic shots of the people. But it is nice to play with the gear.... Cheers for now, A. Oh I should have said...there is one other nifty fifty for those that need to be really budget conscious. The Yongnuo 50 mm f1.8. You can buy it from someone that has stock in Sydney for $82.00 so is a relatively "local" delivery, maybe $10.00 less for an import. The reviews are interesting, especially those comparing it to the canon f1.8 STM which costs double, or the nikon for maybe a little more. For the price it could be said to be the steal of the century..... !

Nice choice FC. that 1.4 screams low light and BOKEH! Great post by the way. And to add to your post here's a review of those 3 50's

Not really IMHO... The 810 is a video upgrade at best. The sensor is tweaked and they've got an extra fps out of the internal memory but the 800 was a landmark camera and for pure photographic muscle stands just as tall as when it was released. That's why they still range them and not the 800E. Nikon has a funny way of releasing things. Their prosumer range is where they largely make their breakthroughs and as a result, there are many Pros with D800s and now D750s. I remember standing at a counter with a pro who was buying a couple of D70s back in the day because they out-gunned his D1 for 1/3 the price. Find great glass... bodies come and go!

true that..... from what I have seen on video reviews the d810 truly does not have an anti aliasing filter so images snapped were sharper as compared to the d800. Also other great features like better AF, electronic front shutter curtain, higher res LCD, and a base ISO of 64. This would give it better dynamic range and be a stop cleaner at higher ISO. These are just numbers and I have not used either so not sure how they will be in real world shooting.

I've shot both side by side with.... Wait for it... The Df!!!! The differences between the 8's weren't enough at the time to get me to swap. Now that we're into videoing jewlery and lapidary the 800 is redundant for what it is and what it does. The faster autofocus on the 810 is a nice bonus... the 750 is like lightening compared to the 800. The Df... What a fun day! If I was burning money I'd buy two and live with the extortionate amount of stuff it doesn't do and it's quirkiness. Its less user-friendly than all the others put together but what fun. I found it a bit uncomfortable after a while but I've big hands and a small heart :rofl:

Funny thing happened this evening. That long exposure photo I took a few days back... Well I posted it on a community page and I sold one print. There is also great interest for me to make a 2016 calendar of the area (my hometown of Altona). Well tomorrow morning I'm heading out again to shoot at another location. Hopefully the weather is nicer as I need some nice colour in the sky.

Well the weather was crap again but I still ventured out this morning to a location called FLEMINGS POOL in Altona. It's not really a pool but more like a bed of rocks when the tide is low. Shot at 6:25am. I was hoping for a little more sunlight to burn the sky a nice orange, so the conditions weren't ideal. Nonetheless, it was good fun getting my feet wet but overall not too happy with the pic and composition. The tide was coming in so really couldn't get to where I wanted to be. The sand you can see in the foreground is actually under the water. ISO100, 11mm, f13, 515seconds.

thanks B, I'm really testing the DR of the sensor here. all are single exposures in RAW. its amazing as to the amount of detail thats in the file that you can bring out. one thing I hate about shooting RAW though is seeing the result on the LCD. its sometimes hard to gauge the result unless it retouch the RAW file on camera to get a little preview of what it could potentially look like after its gone through my post workflow. i guess you can state that these new nikons, d7200, d750 etc with 14.5+ EVs of DR is that they essentially are HDR cameras in a single exposure (my old Canon from 10 years back would die on its ass) Doing an actual HDR (with 3 exposures) will bring the DR to around 19EV but thats only required if the sky is very bright, and if it is, I wave a black card every few seconds infant of the lens to limit the sky being exposed when doing really long exposures.

Oh that poor thing... it wasn't just smacked with the ugly stick! It fell from the top of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. It looks about as ergonomic as church pew and as user-friendly as a 1980's Russian automobile! :rofl: Of course if they changed the name to Nikon.... :stir

not filming anything with it unfortunately. My buddy was testing it out. That's a pre-production model to replace their current offering. Speaking about filming I'm in the midst of a recruitment process for a job and I had to produce a short video on a particular subject. I had to set up my study as a makeshift studio. I used 2 lamps (key and hair light) with grease proof paper as diffusers, and the light coming in from the window as the fill light. I had to stop down the lens to f4 due to flicker from the lights. Had a TelePrompTer on the MacBook and my Nikon recording 1080p in flat picture mode. Was a good experience, I wore a tracksuit with a shirt and blazer. Lol. The beauty of framing what's in and what's out.

So... The D800 has gone to a new home! But what next?? I'm in a dilemma. Another 750 fits the bill perfectly given the changeover price between the 800 and a 750 is pocket change. An 810 suits what we're doing slightly better but certainly not $1200 better. Also, do I await the 810s/820/8million...s???? The only Nikon I've ever bought and not had superceded in the first 6 months is the D750. Every other one... Every flipping time! D70s, D300, D300s, D810 are all cameras I almost owned.... :pan Come on brains trust, I need you now more than ever (first world problems and I might just put the money in the kids accounts and be a bit responsible but I use the for work and they're a tax deduction and having two bodies of comensu............. ..... . :coffee2:

First world problems indeed. Hehe Put the $1200 towards glass, say a 28mm fast prime and get the d750. As you have said, invest in glass.
