ahhh the DC lens. Creamy bokeh. Too bad I'm not much of a portrait kind of guy. Scrap all else and join the wait/back order list. Those are hard to come by.

You're not wrong! I will have to go with an import by the looks (brand new) but my fear is tat they take your money and wait for stock so it could be a good while before it ships. Bentleys Camera House reckon they can get one in and are getting back to me.

It's been a busy early morning for me capturing seascapes at dawn. First pic of the moon is a single exposure 1/5s. Alignment of the sun and moon were directly opposing each other (sun coming up behind me) Second pic of the pier on the right is a 4min exposure 3rd pic of the pier is a HDR of 5 exposures with varying exposure times. Merged in Lightroom as a 32bit DNG and tone mapped in Photoshop. Last pic of the sun coming up is a 3 exposure HDR. I'm not too happy with this one. All images represent the colours seen by my eyes this morning. Altona had some pretty colourful sunrises and sunsets the last couple days. I was hoping for some clouds to break the sky but no luck - clear as day.

If only! We should possibly get on the turps when it's this busy. Everyone invariably gets stressed, doesn't sleep and bickers and moans. A shot of brandy to start the day at 6am then one an hour would solve many an issue... and promote a big refreshing afternoon sleep. Livers possibly might not go the distance....

Quick rant. Yesterday while photographing a guy turned up on location next to me shooting with a canon 5DSR and a canon 11-24 in AUTO mode. Yes. And not only that he was shooting landscapes wide open at f4 at sunrise when I told him to stop his aperture 'down' to increase his depth of field. And thirdly he didn't even compose his image. Just quickly placed camera on tripod and click. No foreground subject etc. with ultra wides you need something close, very close and a nice backdrop too as it's all about perspective and not just fitting everything into frame. I spoke to him (and of course checked out his camera and his settings) and he just loved talking specs. Gear junkie. Nothing else. Pissed me off. Lol The thing that pissed me off the most was I was there on location very early to compose and then await the right light, timing the start of the very Long exposure to capture the sun just as it creeped up over the horizon towards the end of the exposure. He asked me if I could move my camera so he can take a quick photo where I had set up. My response was simply No. Well.... Rant over.

Forget brands, forget hobby.... I understand your pain. I work with is convinced that he will make excellent coffee if he buys one of the new la marzocca linea home machines and a mazzer mini for his home. Forget the fact that he makes very, very average coffee with the good commercial setup at work :mad: he can't be talked down!! I've suggested he joins a suitable online coffee forum like Coffeesnorbes :rofl: 50mpx of crud through F2.8L series lenses is still crud! You may all find this shocking but wonderful photos were taken prior to 50mpx cameras!! One of the best things I've done recently is attend the: http://australianmuseum.net.au/wildlife-photographer-of-the-year-touring-exhibition-information There was a slideshow of photos taken through the years (50 years from memory) and the remarkable change in photographic styles and techniques was evident. Newsflash... a good photo is a good photo irrespective of specs and brands.

i like what I see. Creamy background. So you stopped down to f8 then you set the defocus. So to get my head around it if you set the defocus to the R side to soften it and the F side does what? Does it sharpen the foreground? Do you also need to refocus once you defocus (lol)? Very keen to see more photos. Maybe some Christmas lights in the background at different defocus values in the range. Interesting to see how they are rendered.

ok on a bit of a roll here and apologies if it seems i'm putting our place up as a bit of a nature park, but here was another bit of wildlife that turned up last week, which took the resident wildlife a little by surprise [although interesting to note the different reactions of the dog & the cat]... tried to put the 3 pics in sequence but it didn't work [last pic was supposed to appear first].

What's the entry cost to your wildlife sanctuary admin? Pics are great. That pool looks good with the weather warming up now. My backyard looks like it has been nuked. My staffys destroyed it, as well as any animal that flies down to ground level. The other day I found feathers scattered all over the yard and a pigeon breast left to cook in the sun while one of my dogs was waiting for it to be ready to eat. Funny. Where do you live?

Missed all this while away. Relating this back to coffee making equipment the "auto mode" comment goes straight to the heart of the matter where people buy PID controlled machines and forever use them where they were set at purchase...but they just had to have the PID machine because all their *internet research* led them to conclude that is the "best" machine available. And of course the other comment re linea and grinder is well....what actual coffee industry lives with every day... Well said chaps. That said, for better or worse we are all equipment junkies to a certain extent and buy what we think is "best" for us individually. Just that you have to temper that with real world understanding...and not just internet (or forum) reading induced equipment brand snootism.

...And in regard to earlier discussion re 50 mm lens for me to take away to HOST exhibition. I was travelling light and almost 100% work rather than play, and decided to take only the one lens. The lens worked out perfect. It just took me a couple of days to get used to it. The stands for the most part are huge (not the bog standard 3m x 3m stands you see at local shows). The BFC stand was probably 15 m x 10m and there were plenty bigger as well as a bit smaller. No probs maneovering around subjects with the 50 mm lens. But I should have thrown the 24 - 105 F4 in anyway for the 1/2 day of outside sightseeing that happened. Space however, was that tight, that I just had enough room to squeeze sone very small pressies in for the kids and wife. The backpack finally ended uop at 15 kilos, which is about borderline when you have to walk long distances (eg from exhibition stop train station to exhibition front door is probably 1 kilometer...). The 50mm f1.4 turned out to be an excellent little (and light) number to take along. More pics coming in other (HOST) thread.

I love the versatility of the 50mm and its weight considerations. That's why I haven't bothered with the heavier Sigma 50 Art. You just don't get enough more for the asking price and the weight gain. Here are some very low light shots with the 50mm 1.4 of the kids at Darling Harbour.

50mm are great, light, versatile etc. great for a standard lens. Great to hear you enjoyed it FC. For me I believe I found my niche and that's ultra wide angles. It just works well with landscapes/seascapes.

A little darkness with this 4 minute exposure. Black and white just works with this one.

I think the pic above was at iso6400. It was very dark, certainly much darker than captured. That's great detail in the shadows GK! I will get a chance to shoot the 135 on the weekend with something other than students and kids.
