After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.
Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.
Fault with Breville Dual Boiler - Pump, solenoid or both?
Hi all,
I'm not the most prolific poster but hope someone might have experienced something similar and can steer me in the right direction.
I have a 4 year old BES900 which has been serving me well, but has either one or two faults for which the time I think has come for me to look into.
For ~18 months, particularly during backflush but sometimes during a shot, there's a very loud buzzing noise. It doesn't always happen though, and on perhaps 4-5 occasions the pressure has dropped to ~5 bar at the same time.
I think this is likely the solenoid. Sometimes there's a perceptible delay between hitting the brew switch and the solenoid clicking in.
About 6 months ago I decided I needed a break from my coffee hobby and so it has been stored until 2 weeks ago. It seemed to come out of retirement well with just the intermittent buzzing as above. Last night though, a new symptom presented and obviously isn't going away on its own. During a shot / with a blind, the pump will come up to full pressure, and then after a few seconds drops to anywhere from 7.5 - 8.5 bar. When this happens the pump is sounding very quiet, almost like it has stalled. It sometimes takes 20s to happen and sometimes almost immediately.
So what I'm trying to determine is whether this is a further symptom of a solenoid fault (though I don't see how it could be) or if the pump has done its dash. Or could it even be the OPV? I have adjusted that a couple of times over the years, over time the pressure drifted downwards a little but the machine has never shown the expected symptoms of the common solenoid gasket issue.
I can probably get the parts from needapart, but don't want to spend more than I have to.
