Crema 'Best' Headline competition

edited June 2003 in Off-topic
We at Crema have noticed a lot of pathetic headlines - where the newspaper's sub-editor may have had too many coffees, and got carried away with the puns.

Accordingly, we'd like to announce the 'best' headline competition - send us real examples and we'll publish the headline we judge as being the tackiest, or having the worst puns...

For example, in the Sun Herald a couple of weekends ago, they were talking about Vulcania, a volcano theme park in the Auvergne region of France.

  • Love the idea, admin. "Bean me up, frothy" appeared in SMH Spectrum a couple of months ago. Do we need to send details of the author?
  • Hi KN - that's certainly a great example - preferably we need the name of the newspaper and the day of publication. Ciao Admin PS am pretty sure i've got a copy of that article: will try & dig the details out...
  • actually, I think 'A pitted history - they're just the ripe thing'
  • in fact, while i think of it - has anyone seen that new glossy Sydney magazine, that comes free with teh Sydney Morning Herald once a month? Now that's pathetic - it's got a column called 'Deeply superficial' which pretty much sums up the whole magazine. -L
  • Hate to contribute to my own competition, but was preparing our wine story for the next issue when I saw this headline in the weekend Australian: "Wine body sees red over EGM" - not bad!
  • actually 'Cell, cell, cell: Rivkin goes inside' about stockbroker Rene Rivkin begin sentenced in today's SMH is pretty bad... -Lars
  • RE KN Bean me up frothy SMH Spectrum page 6 18/1/03 In SMH 31/5/03 NEWS section page 9 "When lattes come with vermin, here's the man to call"
  • What about the headline in yesterday's SMH for the article on Paul Bassett - "The incredible Mr Bean".
  • In the food & wine feature in the Daily Telegraph last Tuesday was "Perk up" - about espresso coffee culture.  Why do they always write these stories like coffee has only just been discovered? -L : ??? :o ???
  • "Coffee importers get a roasting" in the Boston Globe!
  • 'The long and the short black of it' from 'Our Health' in the Daily Telegraph on Monday...they've discovered coffee, but if you missed it, you didn't miss anything; just the usual 'we've just discovered coffee' newspaper crap... -L :)
  • Special feature in MX magazine in Melbourne on the Celebrate the Bean coffee festival last weekend...Headlines on consecutive pages were: 1.Daily Grind - 'we brew it, sip it grind it and crave it. Evonne Barry discovers Melbourne's love affair with coffee is stronger than ever' - just a shame they never update the headline! 2.Bean there, love that - now that's original!!! 3.Espress yourself - what can you say...? Lars ;D :-/ ;D
  • yes, well it had to happen: In today's SMH, by Sunanda Creagh and Alexandra Smith: "The Daily Grind pays off with chance to take on the world" and opening sentence: "Think of them as the crema de la crema". ::)
  • In the largest of tabloids an advert: "Time for a quickie with your coffee?" An advert for their Espresso Croswords It goes on to say 'However you like your coffee, this tabloid has the perfect companion for your coffee break. Espresso - a collection of 75 favorite quick crosswords. Each crossword is graded with a coffee bean rating bla bla bla. Only $10.95 plus P&H JD
  • Admin When does the competition end?? In todays good living mag from the Sydney big paper: FRONT COVER HEADING Mountain High The Nimbin crop everyone wants and on page 12 Latte starters There are two pages on local growers up north. JD
  • Who writes the headings and adverts for coffee machines??? Still trying to sort this out? "A PERFECT ESPRESSO every time with four bonus espresso cups" Not sure as to what the four cups have to do with making the purfect espresso. OK, I know that one must read the fine print, that says if you buy this coffee brewer you get a bonus of four cups. But the heading says..... JD
  • John - I think you're right. Closing date for the 'Best headline' competition is Friday 10th September, to be judged by Admin and prize sponsor. • Hi guys - just to let you know, we've decided to extend the 'Best' headline competition for one more week (to Friday 24/9) because one of the judges, namely me, will be away tomorrow... ...so make sure you keep your eye out for the corniest headline - and you could win a great tamper worth $60, kindly provided by Coffeetraining.com. cheers Admin
  • "Desalination worth its salt" - headline from last Friday's Financial Review - it's not just the crappy papers that do corny headlines! -Lars
  • Surely this one is deserving of some recognition (preferably a tamper): From today's SMH: Wife goes nuts September 17, 2004 - 1:43PM A Romanian man had his testicles ripped off by his wife because she believed he was having an affair. Luckily for Aurica Marinescu, 50, surgeons were able to reattach them during a 10-hour operation. "I wouldn't have said she was a strong woman, but she was furious - and she seemed to have superhuman strength in her anger," Marinescu said. "The pain was incredible." PA
  • bit of an old one, though worth the post.... A couple of years ago, with all the Prince Harry drug taking fiasco.....frount page of a British newspaper had..... " Harry Pothead and his stoned philosophies "
  • From today's SMH, regarding an appeal by Paul McCartney for Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign a law banning production of foie gras. The headline was......wait for it..... "Give Geese a Chance" Thank you, thank you very much. John, is it 3:00 yet? Patrick
  • A late entry, this one from 'The Age', Friday 24 September (online at http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/09/23/1095651466803.html), Watchdog offers to bark after it bites concerning changes to the ACCC's merger approval process. Have a good weekend all and C'arn the (Fitzroy) Lions!!!
  • P Sorry I missed the 3.00pm call. Was out all day and just got in, sipping on a cab-merl. Samples of the 03 p-know arrived yesterday. Will do a tasting over the weekend and let you know. The 01 chard is awsome picked up 5 stars in winestate. I think that this best headline comp is over. Maybe admin can start a fresh one. JD
  • Hi guys - just a quick note to confirm that the 'best' headline comp. is officially over...the good news is that there were so many great entries, we will probably take around a week to evaluate all the entries (including a couple or last-minute ones) and choose the winner. Watch this space! Ciao -A
  • Hi guys - sorry it's taken so long, but as some of you know, I've been away, researching a story in India. Anyway, I know the results of the Crema 'Best' headline competition have been eagerly awaited...the winner is Lars, with 'Cell, cell, cell; Rivkin goes inside...' second is KN with 'Bean me up, frothy' and lastly Jeremy, with 'Coffee importers get a roasting'. Congratulations Lars, if you'd like to send in a postal address, we'll make sure the tamper gets to you next week! Cheers -Admin.
  • Just a quick note to say i've received the tamper, and it's a beauty. it's got great balance and makes a great prize! Thanks very much! Lars
  • Actually, credit goes to John at Coffeetraining.com - John, thanks again for providing such a great prize! Admin
  • Lars Congratulations once again. The Tampers are well made and produced in Australia. I am not sure if you realise that the handle screws off and that different size bases are available. Admin It was a lot of fun. Happy to do it all over again. Any ideas for another competition????? JD
