  • I think i have seen it on ebay being sold for $4900 or so Just wondering how good that is
  • What a great roaster, thanks to BF for starting this thread and all the great information. I cannot add much at present except to say I have a bit of tidying up and organising to do in my garage in preparation for an arrival maybe late December. Dedicated power line with RCD, ventilation and a solid bench. Computer is OK,am planning on logging with an Arduino TC4C that i hope to order tomorrow. Cosmic - what a great setup, I like the ventilation,  I hope to setup something similar and will be happy if it turns out even half as good.
  • Welcome Sholayer,  its a pretty exciting time preparing for a new roaster and getting everything right.  At under 5K you can't go wrong with this unit, it's robust and pretty well built. Easy to operate and tweak your roasts, it does take a little bit of practice getting a feel for how the temperature reacts to small adjustments, but thats part of the fun.  :thumb: Same advice I was given, ventilate well, good lighting and start off with 10kg of a little bit forgiving bean and play with the roast profiles. Good luck Chester
  • Just finished re-wiring in an english board on the roaster, I now have a "Bake Switch"  Chester
  • I want to start getting some flexible or hard ducting for ventilation to/from the cyclone - can someone please give me outside diameter of the nozzles? I think the inlet and discharge are different diameters? Thanks, Chris
  • Had my first hic-up with the roaster today, the potentimeter that controls the heat failed. Discovered it when I went to pre heat the roaster and it wouldn't heat up. :'(  Wasn't something I had to touch when I wired in the english board so no real reason for it. Having trouble sourcing the right one in OZ so looks like Hong Kong and delivery after christmas if I can't track one down.  AAAGGGGHHHHHH no roasting over christmas. An easy fix, just a frustrating wait. Chasing a 6mm Knurled Split Shaft Three Terminal Linear Taper Rotary Potentiometer B500K If any one knows a good supplier here please let me know.  :thumb: Chester
  • Oh Chester, sorry to hear about thefailed pot, I will ask around. I realise timing is still an issue but John is bringing in a roaster for me very very soon and the factory may be able to supply one in the same shipment, possibly even spare heating elements if you dont have one.

  • Thanks KK Yep did that, trying to source one localy before having to order over the internet and deal with christmas postage delays. Chester
  • Element14 formerly Farnell in Sydney?
  • Thanks Sholayer :thumb: I will contact them in the morning and see if they have something close to what I need. I will drop John a line and arrange a spare just to be safe. Chester
  • as an interim measure, you can substitute another 500k pot. the split knurled knob doesn't matter from a functional point of view. shouldn't be too hard to track down the right item though. hopefully elrment14 will see you right. contacting john to get the correct/approved spare on its way is exactly what I would do.
  • Just a quick follow up on the pot problem. Ordered a couple from a Sydney company on evil bay, not the cheapest but will arrive quickly  ;D Sent John an email last night, first thing this morning I had an email and a phone call from John to confirm the problem and for him to arrange an original replacment part. These roasters aren't only a great product but also well supported by John. Thanks to all the quick replys of advice. Chester
  • Hi all, new to the forum and though I've been considering it as as concept for some time, new to the idea of roasting. Got talking to a friend who owns a cafe recently and after a few beers thought we might give rotating a try. Thought getting something the size of the CCR might be a good place to star. If his appreciation of flavor and my doggedness worked out, we might expand to a bigger machine at a later date. I've been looking at eBay for a while and can't see a link to the vendor of this unit. Any chance someone could post or PM a link? Alternately, anyone out these looking to get rid of a similar roaster... ;-) Will pay in the classified when I qualify to do so. Thanks!
  • I've been in touch with a manufacturer OS that makes a similar roaster, looks pretty much identical anyway: Alex Zhang from Zhengzhou Allance Trading Co., Ltd. I asked for a quote, delivered, for just 1x unit. His response: "As for 1Kg Electric Heated Coffee roaster, best FOB Price at USD1800. if you want delivery by DHL to Western Australia (Perth / Fremantle), DHL Charges at USD620. Total price at USD2420." Here's a link with a little more info: http://allance.en.alibaba.com/product/524854135-213144605/1Kg_Coffee_Roaster.html?edm_src=sys&edm_type=fdbk&edm_grp=0&edm_cta=read_msg&edm_time=realtime&edm_ver=e There are loads of manufacturers in China making these. Not sure if parts/manufacturing is shared, but alas, it seems you can get a Chinese 1kg elec or gas roaster for about $2500 landed. Of course, I should add a disclaimer about power requirements, quality of wiring, approval/standards, taxes, blah blah. I don't know. It could end up still costing $5k landed. Who knows? Who's got $2.5k to find out? :)

Nice!  I don't need any extra volume so for me it's a no which is coincidental because the wife said it was a no before I even told her about your awesome deal James!  Now hurry up and finish ya cold press!
  • cold brew? it's on right now actually. Brewing a Yirg Chelba natural in it! Should be lovely for this hot week in Perth. 2013 is the year I get me a roaster. Biggest issue I have is my corretto hates anything other than 500-600gm. Sometimes I just want to roast 200gm. I would be keen for one of these 1kg roasters, if I could pull off small batches in them as well as 1.2kg batches. Else, perhaps I should look at a quest or huky :)
  • I reckon you should go for it mate.  Re-read BF's excellent thread and know what you're in for.  Pictures of the Cold press would be great *hint*
  • My CCR arrived on friday night - huge crate in the middle of the driveway but now safely stored in the garage. It looks great in black with the bronze top plate. I asked for orange paint but it wasnt available. I have the frontplate getting drilled and tapped for thermocouples, will fit them tonight and then I plan to do my first roast. A very nice unit, plenty of fan power and as BF has said - good heating power. Just looking at it is quite intimidating after stepping from the Quest but this is now where the learning starts. Chris

    selling the Quest? :)
  • Not just yet James but you will get definitely get the first email. 2 roasts down after a rocky start, these roasters have so much mass and are so very thermally stable, it will take a bit of getting used to. I will be doing about 650gm roasts for a while so I want to focus on building a profile for a couple of favourite beans, Rwanda Inzovu, Harrar Impala and often a Yirg. The first roast of Yirg tonight rebounded very quickly after load but for a first roast I was very pleased. I slowed the. Rwanda down for the 2nd roast and was very happy with the curve. Am certainly very happy with the roaster and also the back up from John, Chester too, thanks for your advice, I may have been a bit of a 'nervous new father'. Chris
  • Fantastic Chris, welcome to the CCR family.  Very pleased you have worked through those first few teething problems  :) Hope it brings you many happy hours of roasting. We will have to share some profiles here as we find those exceptional roast outcomes. (I know that it's all subjective but occasionally cant we all agree ) Regards Chester

I got sent a shot from John last night of the now tweaked versions being currently made. They will now be supplied with agitation and a more traditional cooling tray as pictured. Gas consumption on the one shown is rated at .3kg/hr but I would think carefully on a gas one for commercial use as compliance costs may be as much as the roaster.
A quote from an earlier posting of yours Tim, but could you expand on the "compliance costs" scenario for a gas roaster? Is this (compliance) only required for commercial operations and not needed for "home roasting"? I am pondering a gas setup in my garage as I thought it to be a cheaper energy option. Cheers.
  • Well fellow CCR-1kgers, without going into any details due to its irrelevancy (no other 500g CCr owners here), I have handed back the 500grammer, dug deeper into my pockets  :P and took delivery of a 1kg model today from John. Just couldn't take a backward step in my coffee addicted journey, so onwards and upwards eh? So any helpful advice offered will be gratefully accepted as I attach the "L" plates and "get into it".  ::) Firstly: Chris, if you could let me know the location and size holeyou used for the thermocouple and what data logging equipment/type do you use/recommend. I AM going to back-step my way through this thread (again :P) to refresh my brain with the info posted by Tim and the others, so the answer to that question may be in there somewhere. I still have to hook up the chaff catcher and orientate the roasting bench to accommodate this larger roaster, so hope to make the initial sacrificial  >:D roast on Wednesday. Back soon, Kevo
  • Fantastic Kevo.  There are many if us living vicariously through all you guys.  Roast well mate!
  • Congratulations Kevo A good move to a great roaster, lots of fun ahead. Sorry I have just seen your post and am at work, when I get home I will get you info on the thermocouple position etc. Info at the moment - I use the factory standard thermocouple that displays temp on the control panel, I also have fitted a Victor 86B I got thru CS, this has a thermocouple and logs to the meter and on to a computer. So I log the roast and store on computer, can send a couple of profiles if you like. There is a fair difference between the 2 temps but I take the main readings from the Victor meter as I have used it for a couple of years on both a coretto and a Quest M3 so am happy with the temps it shows. Also I have checked against boiling water (100C) and frozen peas (-4C ish) I am doing 650 gm roasts, so bean volume in the drum is fairly consistent, subject to bean size, the first position for the Victor thermocouple was fitted to the left hand screw of sightglass, I took the door off and drilled and tapped it out to M6 and fitted thermocouple. It has since been moved, present position I will get to you later with a photo. I also have an TC4C running Artisan, not set up in the roaster yet, I havent had much luck with it but I plan to spend some more time with it in the next month, try to get it going. One thing I have noticed with roasts from this roaster - the results seem better with a good rest time. I have read that some guys roasting on different equip drink after 4 days, I get good tastes after at least 9 days onwards and had superb MM after 6 weeks, so let them rest, just build up a supply in the cupboard and you will appreciate it more. Again, congrats Chris
  • Kevo Here is a photo of where I have my BT thermocouple, 25mm long probe, M6 thread, bought from CS. It was in the LHS of the sightglass, moved it from there to vertically up 20mm. Seems OK for 650 gm loads and would also be OK for larger loads. I am using the factory thermocouple for ET but am not sure how accurate it is, I will be moving it soon. Chris
  • Thanks for the info and suggestions Chris. I started her up and did three roasts Thursday morning. Used some of my older beans, starting with 650gms of Malawi Nyika AA. Dropped them in at 150 and pulled just on 2C at 16mins. I was relatively happy with the way it went as a first up roast. Looks about a CS 7/8, tried some in a long black yesterday and it tasted very bland. As you say, leave 'em longer, but I have completely run out of browns, so I'm going to be on the tasting wagon as these mature. Second roast (600gms) Bolivia Green Mountain was a bit of a disaster and took over 25 min! A guess, as I accidentally reset the timer. Not drank any as yet. The third (760gms) Haiti Grand Cru dropped at 190 took too long to 1C (18 min) unless I missed it ::). I am going to try 1kg next week to test its performance at (marketed) maximum load. Yeah, I know Tim has done 1.3kg roasts, but I want to test this roaster's capabilities. Only roasting with the factory thermocouple readings at this stage until I get around to purchasing and fitting a BT. Ah well, it seems the "L" plates will be on for a fair while yet, but that's what it's all about eh? This journey! ;) Cheers.
  • Hi Kevohere I had a lot of success on my ccr doing 1kg loads, pretty consistent with 1st at 9:30 @ 175-180 second and finish normally around that 14:30 depending on if I was backing off the heat or holding her steady. BF gave me a good outline to start with, something like :- Drop in  at 180-190 2 mins at 90 -100% heat no fan 80% heat 40% fan to around the 6-7 min mark 60% heat 40% fan till start first crack 30 secs full fan to clear out any dead air 50% 50% thruogh first, slowly adding a little more heat to finish. and tweaked it from there depending on the bean to maintain even temp gains and avoiding stalls towrads the end. (% are based on dial on ccr) Wish I could work this on the silver streak  ;D Happy roasting Chester
  • Hi Bean flying.  It's been 1 year since you purchased the CCR.  Any further thoughts on it? I don't think you've posted a photo of the final setup with Chaff collector in place (unless it's buried within this thread somewhere). What about all the other CCR owners?  Any issues?  Really looking to upgrade from my corretto roaster which has been serving me faithfully but need the higher capacity with the amount of friends and families asking me to roast for them...plus I want more 'blings'  :P
