After the old forum software breaking in a way that we were unable to fix, we've migrated the site to a new platform.

Some elements aren't working as we'd hoped - some avatars didn't survive the transition, and we're still having issues with attachments that weren't added as inline images, but we're hoping to have that all sorted out soon.

What coffee am I drinking at the moment?

  • You guys have created a monster  >:D. At least 2 kilos should last me, hopefully, three weeks.
  • I've ordered some Decaf and some Roaster's Choice from MyCuppa.  I usually roast my own decaf and its chocolatey loveliness is often remarked upon by a much loved friend who is a non-coffee drinker but prefers it to the standard hot chocolate.  A well made quality Decaf is really great.... Trust me. I'm keen to try Jeffs!!!  Will update when said order arrives ;)
  • Please do Brett :). I think I have become a Jeff fangirl  :thumb:.

It will be interesting to see if we both get the same Roasters Choice.
  • I just went through 1/2 of my 500g batch this morning. Had some friends drop by and we got loaded up on a couple blacks then finished off with a latte. Had to give my machine a backflush after all that hard work. Impressed though as I was pulling shot after shot. Recovery time was quick. I'll need a two group (or a lever sitting next to my e61) if this keeps happening. I think tax returns are just around the corner.
  • They're on their way  :D. You'll be ordering again in no time too GeekKopi  :P. I am wanting a lever too, probably a Europiccola. Maybe I will find one under the Christmas tree this year  :coffee2:.

I think so too. Before you settle on the Elektra / europiccola do your due diligence as those little levers are a PITA to surf to the right extraction temp - they need a lot of intervention to get a shot pulled right.  That's just me but others might have different thoughts.
  • Will do, I am just in the planning/research stage, nothing definite yet :).
  • did my first roast in my new behmor plus yesterday - 100g of India Elephant Hills AA And fired it up as a latte this morning! Roast was very even with nice colouration - 8min to the end of first crack and the start of second - then hit the cool down cycle coffee only a day old but good aromatics of toasted almonds, turmeric, and caramel tasted great in the cup very easy to drink with medium body and good aromatics if it tastes this good now it can only get better time to fire up the roaster i think!

great work mate. I'll be looking forward to hearing about your roasts. I might even get seated to pull the pin and get one of those bad boys later this year.

Turmeric you say! This has started me thinking...... curried coffee  :lamp: Season the greens overnight in a mixture of turmeric (and cardamom?) powder, remove all excess powder (tumbling between colanders in front of a fan), gently rub the beans with unbleached cotton (old bean bags) to help impregnate spice(s), then roast.  ??? ??? Stop and counsel me now folks if you think I'm having a  or  :head:
  • I'm about to make a 'un caffè corretto alla "mastika"' Hopefully I can still taste the mycuppa espresso blend. I've had this bottle for a few years. Mastika is a spirit seasoned with mastic. Think Italian "grappa" with a twist.

Sounds good -  pretty sure you'd need to massage each bean individually in order to get full effect ...
  • Oh no, I won't be drinking much of anything. I have what looks to be like around 100gms of beans left until my order gets here, I really hoped it would be delivered this morning. I refuse to buy from the rude cafe. My best chances lie in hoping the local supermarket has some fresh Rios beans or I am in deep  ;D. Quelle horreur!

I was in a similar situation last weekend. I had no choice but to step out and buy some interim beans while awaiting the arrival from mycuppa. The long weekend screwed me up as auspost was closed. You have a Nespresso right?
  • All is takes is a little misjudgement and we get stuck lol. The problem is there is really nowhere around here to buy quality beans. I used to buy from the cafe but I am refusing to line the pockets of rude peoples, I would drink tea before I did that again. A while back a coffee place not too far from me opened up and as far as I knew they only sold takeaway or dine in coffee but I figured I would ask them on their FB page if they do sell beans and they do so I will choof off and get some shortly- just trying to con hubby in to taking me because I hate driving as it is and their car park is very small :P. Matt has a Dolce Gusto but I'm not keen on them :P.
  • Yessss. Matt and I choofed off to the new place that has just opened up to grab and emergency bag of beans and of course we couldn't say no to a latte and cappuccino made on their Slayer  :P. The name of the shop is called Viscous Coffee and is on Beach Road at Christies Beach for anyone who may be in the area, the guy who runs it was really chatty and just a general, all round nice guy . Anyway I grabbed a bag of his aptly named house blend. e7fodf.jpg
  • Well done Sue. Hopefully they'll (SV) turn out to be a nice option for you. I'm sure we will read the results pretty soon.
  • Thanks Kevo, just hoping I can do them some justice  :P.

I love my Pavoni lever and had made some lovely shots on it.  I woulndn't say PITA... I'd say low volume and idiosyncratic.

    Sounds just like me  :D.
  • SV is a very, very nice smooth drop. Unfortunately my grinder disagrees. Is it fair to say that a medium roasted coffee requires a coarser grind than what a darker roast does? I had to sink around 5 shots before I got anywhere near what it should be  :head:.

Yep. Finer grind for lighter roasts ( and updosing too). Also applies to beans that aren't so fresh.
  • I had to grind coarser for the medium grind then what I would for a darker roast, I did have to up the dose a smidge too  :-|. The grinder didn't like it much at all lol. Beans are nice and fresh :).
  • I find the opposite. A darker roast I grind a little coarser. Lighter roast I grind finer and updose to get more out. For fresh beans it's coarser. For slightly stale it's finer. When it's humid (the beans attract the moisture) it's coarser.
  • Hmm, maybe I just don't know what I am doing  :pan. I had grind time on 11 and grind on 15, usually I grind on around 7-8. This morning I had to take Matt to his place of work experience so I switched the machine on before I left sthen it would be ready to rock when I got home. SV was perfect, even the espresso sip I had was palatable  :coffee2:.

You're doing things right. The grind depends on the type of beans (where they are from, the blend, the roast, their age, the weather etc) but as long as you like the shot then you got it right.
  • I hope so lol. It was a perfect 30/30 shot and tasted fantastic, I could easily have drank it as an espresso and that doesn't happen often  :thumb:.
  • I am supping on the last of the Sid Viscous now and about to clean the grinder. My MyCuppa order arrived this morning, 1kg of Espresso and 1kg of Roasters Choice which turned out to be a Colombian. Decisions, decisions.

Aaaaaaand they are down for delivery this morning  :coffee2:.
Hi Sue, So whats your final verdict on the Suuweet blend? I just ordered a kilo so they should be here early/mid next week. R
